Tranmere v Forest Green

Tranmere v Forest Green Betting Preview

In our Tranmere v Forest Green betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Overview

Wembley plays host to the National League play-off final on Sunday with Tranmere and Forest Green facing off for a spot in the Football League. Tranmere make the trip to the capital in sensational form and they were unfortunate to miss out on automatic promotion after finishing four points behind champions Lincoln. They’ve lost just one of their previous fourteen league games and they come into this clash as favourites to win promotion. Taking them on is Forest Green, who’re in their second play-off final in as many seasons. They were beaten 3-1 by Grimsby twelve months ago and manager Mark Cooper will be hoping his sides learnt from their mistakes as they look to go one better this time round.

Tranmere v Forest Green

Forest Green have taken four points off Tranmere this season. Drawing 2-2 at the New Lawn in November before winning 1-0 at Prenton Park in April

Tranmere have won nine of their last thirteen league games

It’s been a magnificent season for Tranmere Rovers and their fans will be travelling to Wembley quietly confident that they can secure promotion. Rovers have been involved in a tussle at the top of the table with Lincoln for the entirety of the campaign and they’ve proven that they’re a major force in the National League. It’s only Micky Mellon’s first season at the club and despite taking over a side with one of the biggest budgets around, he’s done an impressive job to get them firing and challenging at the top of the table. He’s transformed them into a side that’s capable of grinding out results along with scoring lots of goals – which is a lethal combination.

Only three sides have scored more goals than Tranmere and only Lincoln have won more games than their 29, which shows just how dangerous they are. And they make the trip to Wembley in terrific form, having won nine of their last twelve National League games. Mellon’s men are peaking just at the right time and some of the football they’re producing is definitely above the level they’re playing at. They have tremendous strength in depth with plenty of FL experience so we can see them handling the occasion well. One man who’s really caught the eye recently is academy graduate Cole Stockton, he has seven goals in his last eight games and we’re backing him to make the difference at the national stadium.

Second time lucky for Forest Green?

Forest Green are another side who’ve improved drastically this season and despite being considered outsiders for this one, they’re more than capable of lifting the trophy. It’s the second successive year that they’ve appeared in the National League play-off final after being beaten by Grimsby last season and that experience could be crucial. Naivety and a lack of concentration cost them last year and they’ve bounce back impressively from it, going on to comfortably secure their place in this years final. They overcame Dag & Red in the play-off semi-finals 3-1 on aggregate to book their spot at Wembley but their form hasn’t been the best recently.

Mark Coopers men have won just one of their last five National League games which doesn’t stand them in particularly good stead, but as we all know the form book can go out the window on days like this. They haven’t been at their prolific best but they’re still the divisions top scorers with 88 goals and they have some potent attacking players. The likes of Christian Doidge, Rhys Murphy and Keanu Marsh-Brown are match winners at this level and they’ll be monitored closely. There’s not much separating these two sides on paper and we’re expecting the end result to be close, with Tranmere’s quality just edging it. There should be plenty of goals with the amount of attacking talent that’s on display so we’re backing a Tranmere win & BTTS – best priced at bet365.

Like most play-off finals, this clash is a close one to call with little separating each of these sides. Tranmere come in as 7/5 favourites with SkyBet which is very well priced when you take their current form into consideration. Forest Green are slight outsiders at 2/1 with bet365 which is a big price if you fancy them to get the job done. The draw is available at 12/5 with BetVictor if you think they’ll be nothing to separate them at the final whistle. If you can see it going the distance, Tranmere are 8/11 with SkyBet to lift the trophy whilst FGR are 11/10 with BetVictor.
