Two of the Best & Worst January Twitter Announcements

Modern day football has evolved in more ways than one, it is now the norm to see a club pay over £50 million for a defender, with attackers being sold for astronomical fee’s in the region of £80 million. On deadline day, much talk surrounded the future of Leicester playmaker Riyad Mahrez. The 26-year-old, who was wanted by Manchester City as a replacement for the recently injured Leroy Sane looked to be on his way to the Etihad for an astonishing £65 million. Talks fell through however after City could not meet the Foxes valuation of £95 million for the Algerian.

Two players that did move in this January’s winter window though were Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Philippe Coutinho. Aubameyang made his long anticipated move from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal for £60 million, while Coutinho swapped Anfield for The Nou Camp in his £142 million move from Liverpool to Spanish giants Barcelona.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s unveiling at Arsenal didn’t quite go to plan…

With any new signing a club makes, there’s always an official unveiling. And these have also evolved in more ways than one over the years. Gone are they days where clubs unveiled a new player by calling a press conference, answering a few questions and posting a picture of him holding the shirt of his new team with somewhat of a forced grin on his face. These days it’s a much more extravagant affair, with teams now making a real song and dance out of the procedure.

This years January transfer window provided us with some fantastic entertainment. Teams from all over the country have used their expansive follower base on social media to create some really engaging content for us all to enjoy. The likes of Aston Villa, Fleetwood and Arsenal, among others have really gone to town on showing off their new acquisitions this year. Below, we’ve listed a couple of our personal favourites alongside a couple of the, erm, not so favourites. Take a look and see what you think of this new approach clubs are taking when unveiling their new players to the public; tweet us your thoughts @footyaccums!

Fleetwood Town – Kevin O’Connor (Loan from Preston)

The Cod Army announced Irishman O’Connor would be joining them on loan from Preston for the remainder of the season on Twitter last week. The 22-year-old, who joined arrived at Deepdale in the summer from Cork City has seen first team chances limited this term, so has moved to Highbury to get some minutes under his belt. He made headlines over Christmas when he won €1,000,000 on the Irish lottery after his uncle bought him a ticket as a present. Fleetwood obviously saw an opportunity with that, and they took it, unveiling O’Connor in a lottery themed video which went down a storm on Twitter!

Aston Villa – Lewis Grabban (Loan from Bournemouth)

The arrival of Bournemouth striker Lewis Grabban was made public in the dying hours of the January transfer window. The 30-year-old frontman was initially recalled to his parent club after spending the first half of the campaign playing for Championship strugglers Sunderland. After Grabban failed to find a permanent move away from the Vitality Stadium, he was again sent out on loan to Aston Villa for the remainder of the season. His announcement video is so bad that it’s weirdly pretty good.

Not so good…

Arsenal – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)

A painfully cringe-worthy video in it’s own right, made worse by the fact that Arsenal released it by accident the night before it was due to be officially announced. Arsenal’s unveiling of 28-year-old striker Aubameyang, signed from Borussia Dortmund for £60 million seems extremely forced, uncomfortable and makes our hairs stand on end. We feel as though someone in the Gunners marketing department might be looking for a new job this week after this one…

Samuel Eto – Atiker Konyaspor (Antalyaspor)

Veteran striker Samuel Eto this week joined Turkish side Atiker Konyaspor. The well travelled front man has turned out for some of Europe’s top teams throughout his illustrious career but has now probably made his final transfer as a professional footballer. His new club paid homage to his successful career by releasing a Game of Thrones style video hopping from each of the stadiums he has frequented over the years. Nothing wrong with that, until the end. We don’t quite know what he’s wearing sat on that throne, or why he’s dressed like an 80’s version of a peaky blinder, but it’s pretty unnerving to say the least.
