It’s been a transitional week for AC Milan, who parted company with Vincenzo Montella after he’d fallen short in returning the club back to being the challenging side they once were. Former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso came in as his replacement, with a view to at very least assuring stability until the end of the season, but having the option to stay on full-term if he made enough of a positive impact. Things are already looking extremely poor for his chances of a long-term tenure though, as they drew with Benevento in his first game at the helm.

The Rossoneri scored just before half-time but saw their effort cancelled out by an equaliser just five minutes into the second half. Former Blackburn Rovers forward Nikola Kalinic then put Milan in front yet again in the fifty-seventh minute with it looking certain to be a strong win for Gennaro Gattuso in his opening game. Everything looked set for three points up until stoppage time, where goalkeeper Alberto Brignoli came up for a free-kick, diving head-first into the penalty area to snatch a point in the most dramatic of ways, scoring an absolutely sensational headed goal.

All involved at AC Milan were left understandably furious, even prompting the sending off of defender Alessio Romagnoli, but it’s hard to fault Benevento, who’ve been so poor that this will go down as their first point, standing as a side who failed to take a single point in their first fourteen games in the Serie A previous to hosting Gattuso’s men. They found promotion through the play-offs in Serie B last season and are looking like Italy’s answer to Huddersfield Town.
