The sporting world was shocked back in November, when Brazilian side Chapecoense were involved in a devastating plane crash, losing the lives of seventy-one people, where nineteen consisted of the club’s players, staff and PR team. There were only a handful of survivors, but those who miraculously made it now have to get by with life changing injuries.

Support flooded in from clubs around the world but it was a proposed friendly from Spanish giants Barcelona that touched the club’s hearts the most, which was played out yesterday. It ended as a 5-0 victory for Barcelona but it wasn’t the result that anyone involved was at all interested in, as the solidarity between Chapecoense and the rest of the world stood tall, highlighted most when subbed off survivor Alan Ruschel received an overwhelming standing ovation at the coveted Nou Camp Stadium.

The match itself ended up being the coming together of two sides that everyone had hoped for, with Barcelona’s players all deeply moved by the trauma suffered by their opposition in recent months. Superstar forward Lionel Messi met up with Alan Ruschel afterwards to sign his captain’s shirt, making the day all the more memorable for the recovering Brazilian side.
