Phone-in radio shows always have unpredictable outcomes, with all too many leading to funny, heated, or embarrassing encounters between managers, players, celebrities, and members of the general public. Sunderland manager Chris Coleman was involved in his own bizarre phone call recently, where a drunken Black Cats fan rang the former Wales boss, but hadn’t planned for what he was going to ask his side’s new gaffer.

He was appearing on a local radio station before getting called up by a man called Steve who, after greeting everyone involved on the radio show, said he was ‘over the moon that you’re here’ and shocking producers with accidentally saying ‘f*ckin’ hell, you’re unbeaten, I believe?’. It would have been taken poorly if it weren’t for Chris Coleman immediately correcting him with: “No, no, I lost my first game away at Villa.”

The embarrassed radio presenter then came in to the rescue, jokingly saying ‘apart from that one though Steve, hundred percent record.’ The man on the other end of the phone then admitted ‘I have had a few cans’ and it started to make more sense as to why the conversation was so strange. It’s admitted that the caller doesn’t actually have a question and doesn’t really remember why he even called in the first place, resulting in Chris Coleman struggling to contain his laughter, and making for an extremely peculiar radio show. A journalist who works closely with Sunderland recorded a clip of the phone conversation between Chris Coleman and the caller, see it in full below.
