Watford v Southampton Betting Tips & Odds

In our Watford v Southampton betting preview we look at what could possibly be the best bets between the two sides.

A Southampton side struggling for points at the wrong end of the table travel to Watford this weekend in a game both sides will be desperate to triumph in after an underwhelming festive period. The hosts go into this fixture having won just one of their previous nine outings, while the visitors haven’t won a league game since their 4-1 thrashing of Everton back at the end of November.

Marco Silva takes his Watford side to St.Mary’s this weekend to take on a Southampton side struggling for form.

Disappointing December for Watford

The hosts go into this game in pretty bleak form, six defeats in their last seven league games have seen them slip from 8th to 10th in the table, with a 2-1 victory over Leicester on Boxing Day proving the only shining light throughout an abysmal festive period. A win here over Southampton could lift the Hornets above 9th placed Everton (should the Toffee’s lose to Tottenham this weekend) and set them up perfectly for their forthcoming game away to Leicester next weekend. Watford’s previous two league games against Swansea and Manchester City have ended in a defeat, but they have managed to score in both of them, so backing a both teams to score bet could be a good option here – that’s currently priced at an appealing 8/11 with Betfair.

Watford have conceded the third most goals out of anyone in the Premier League this season, Marco Silva’s men have let in a whopping forty goals in twenty-two matches, so clearly have some pressing defensive issues to put right if they’re to challenge for a spot in the top eight come the end of the campaign. With fourteen goals conceded in their last seven games, the hosts are conceding two goals per game on average at this moment in time, a statistic that could put them in real trouble if it continues. Southampton have scored four goals in their previous five matches away from home, so this game could well feature plenty of goals. With that said, an over 2.5 bet could be a good shout here! That’s priced at 1/1 with Coral.

The visitors have lost their last four away games.

Saints dangerously close to the drop zone

Southampton find themselves in unfamiliar territory at the moment, the Saints are usually mainstays in the top half of the table, with them rarely dropping below 10th place each season. That isn’t the case this time around however, they’ve had an extremely underwhelming first half to their campaign and now lie 17th in the table after twenty-two matches. A defeat here to Watford could see Mauricio Pellegrino’s men drop into the bottom three, providing manager-less Stoke avoid defeat to Manchester United on Monday evening, so it really is all to play for for the South Coast outfit this weekend.

Last time out Southampton were beaten 2-1 by Crystal Palace after surrendering a 1-0 lead in the first half. Out of sorts striker Shane Long scored his first goal since February to put the hosts in front in that clash at St.Mary’s, before two goals in the final twenty minutes of the game from James McArthur and Luka Milivojević snatched the points for Roy Hodgson’s men in extremely difficult conditions on the South Coast. A 1-0 win over Championship outfit Fulham last Saturday in the FA Cup does mean that Saints go into this encounter with a bit of momentum, something they’ll desperately need to take advantage of if they’re going to get anything out of this game with the Hornets.
