Wigan v Aston Villa Betting Preview

In our Wigan v Aston Villa betting preview we look at the best possible bets between the two sides.

Managerless Wigan welcome Aston Villa to the DW Stadium looking to grab a much needed win. The Tics are currently second from bottom with just two wins from their last ten. Their poor form saw manager Warren Joyce sacked after just four months in the Wigan hot seat and their hopes of staying up lie on the shoulders of interim boss Graham Barrow – who has a huge job on his hands. Aston Villa make the trip to Greater Manchester fourteen points better off than their opponents but it’s been an under par campaign for them. However, they’re currently on a decent run of form with four wins from their last five and they’ll be confident that they can add to that here.

Times running out for Wigan

This was always going to be a difficult season for Wigan after securing promotion back into the Championship in May. They came into the campaign confident that they could stay up but it’s been an incredibly difficult time for the club. It’s seen them get through two managers with the latest, Warren Joyce receiving his marching orders in midweek. His former assistant Graham Barrow now faces the challenge of keeping them in the second tier and it’s going to be tough for him, with just nine games of the season remaining. His side have won just two of their previous ten league games and things won’t get easier anytime soon with some tough games coming up.

They were last in action on Saturday when they welcomed fellow strugglers Bristol City to the DW Stadium for a big six pointer. It was a game that both sides found difficult to get a foothold in and it was decided late on. Robins centre-half Aden Flint popped up with a crucial winner with just two minutes left on the clock in scrappy circumstances to break Wigan hearts and seal Joyce’s fate. Their performances in front of their own supporters is one of the reasons why they’re down at the wrong end of the table and their record doesn’t make good reading. They’ve won just once in their previous thirteen games at home and they really need to start turning these draws into wins.

Villa starting to hit some form under Bruce

Much like Wigan, it’s been a miserable season for Aston Villa and they’re very much building for next year. The Villans came into the campaign as one of the favourites to challenge for promotion but it really hasn’t gone to plan. They’ve spent the majority of the campaign stuck in the bottom half, even dropping around the drop zone to the anger of the clubs suffering supporters. Manager Steve Bruce has a job on his hands restoring them to their former glory but the recent signs are promising, with them winning four of their last five. The latest in that sequence came on Saturday when they welcomed play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday to Villa Park.

On paper it was one of Villa’s toughest tests of the campaign but they managed to come through it quite comfortably in the end. A brace from Jonathan Kodjia either side of a Vincent Sasso red card sealed a much need 2-0 win and it’s lifted them into the top half of the table. A place in the top six is way out of grabs but they’ll be battling to finish as strongly as they can. If they’re to climb up the table, much will depend on the performances of Kodjia who’s been in great form recently. The Ivorian has netted six goals in his last nine appearances and we can see him enjoying himself against this out of sorts Wigan outfit.
