Wigan v Oxford Betting Tips & Odds – 17/04/18

Wigan v Oxford Betting Tips & Odds

In our Wigan v Oxford betting preview we look at what could possibly be the best bets between the two sides.

League One table toppers Wigan welcome 17th placed Oxford United to the DW Stadium this Tuesday, looking to get back to winning ways following a disappointing 0-0 draw with Rotherham on Saturday. The Latics find themselves in a promising position as things stand, they’re currently leading the division, ahead of Blackburn on goal difference alone but do have a game in hand over Tony Mowbray’s men. The visitors by contrast head into this match in poor form after winning just one of their previous six league games, making them firm underdogs here.

Championship in touching distance for the hosts

Wigan have been the standout team in League One this season, they’ve occupied the top two for the majority of the campaign and now seem as though they will be plying their trade in the second tier once again next season. With just 5 games left to play the hosts know that they can’t slip up at this pivotal stage and after drawing with Rotherham on Saturday will know that a win against a struggling Oxford side here is so important in their quest to clinch the league title at the end of next month. They’ll feel very confident in their chances of a win here, they’ve won their last five meetings against Oxford, and in December thrashed them 7-0 away from home thanks to goals from Will Grigg (3), Max Power (2), Nick Powell & Gavin Massey.

It’s unlikely we’ll see a repeat of that drubbing here, but we can see the points once again being awarded to Wigan. Paul Cook’s men have lost just two games at home all season and won’t want to throw away their position at the top of the table by dropping points to a side struggling at the wrong end of the division. Wigan are priced at 10/11 to win this match with a -1 handicap (SkyBet), so that could be a profitable bet if, like us, you fancy the hosts here. Leading goalscorer Will Grigg has bagged 24 goals this term (all competitions) so will definitely be the main threat for the hosts in this encounter. Grigg is best priced at 10/3 to bag first in this clash with Bet365, and we think that could be another great bet considering the form he’s displayed in recent weeks.

Will Grigg

Wigan front man Will Grigg will be the hosts main threat here.

One win in six for the visitors

Karl Robinson’s Oxford travel north with little confidence after winning just one of their previous six games in League One. That win did come in their most recent clash on Saturday however, as they beat Southend 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium. Two first half goals from James Henry and Ricardinho clinched a much needed win for The U’s in that fixture on home soil, meaning they head into this game with a bit of momentum. The form book doesn’t make for good reading if you’re an Oxford fan however: they’ve won just one of their previous eleven games away from home this season and head into this clash on the back of three straight defeats on the road against AFC Wimbledon, Portsmouth & most recently Shrewsbury.

It’s going to take something very special for the visitors to get anything out of this game, but after Wigan were held at the weekend and Oxford picked up their first win since mid-March, they’ll feel as though they stand half a chance if they play to their full potential. Only one of Oxford’s last eight away games have ended in under 2.5 goals, and with Wigan scoring so many goals at home this term, we can see this game being a fairly high-scoring affair. Over 2.5 goals is best priced at 4/5 with Betfred, and we would recommend that after taking a look at the form book.

James Henry Oxford

Oxford wideman James Henry opened the scoring in their 2-0 win over Southend on Saturday.
