Wolves v Birmingham Betting Tips & Odds

In our Wolves v Birmingham betting preview we look at what could possibly be the best bets between the two sides.

Overview

It’s a West Midlands derby in the Championship this Sunday as league leaders Wolves welcome Birmingham to Molineux. The visitors go into this fixture as strong favourites considering their dominant stance at the top of the division, they’re unbeaten in their previous six league matches and beat play-off hopefuls Derby 2-0 in their last game on Tuesday night. Birmingham by contrast find themselves fighting for their lives at the wrong end of the table. The Blues are just three points above the drop zone as things stand, but have played one more game than 22nd place Barnsley meaning a win in this game is absolutely vital for their chances of survival this term.

Hosts with the title in their grasp

Wolves have been the standout team in the Championship this season, they’ve won 28 of their 42 games and have lost just 6 since the campaign started back in the summer. Nuno Espírito Santo’s men have won their last two games against two of the teams also gunning for a spot in the Premier League next season. Last Friday they beat Cardiff 1-0 away from home thanks to a sublime free-kick from star man Ruben Neves, and on Tuesday night they defeated Derby 2-0 – again, it was Neves who was on the scoresheet with arguably the goal of the season. The Portuguese midfielder flicked the ball up from outside the area and found the top corner with a strike that looked almost impossible to finish. Diego Jota was also on the scoresheet in that clash at Molineux, opening the scoring on the 6th minute with another well taken goal.

The sheer amount of goals Wolves have scored this season has made them one of the best Championship sides of all time. The hosts have netted 76 times in their 42 league games so far, they’re such a ruthless outfit with so much attacking talent amongst their ranks. The likes of Neves, Jota & Bonatini have been so influential towards Wolves’ success this term and they’ll feel confident about grabbing another win here over a Birmingham side who have been far from impressive this time out. We can see them making it three wins in three here, but the odds for backing Wolves just to win are extremely short, so we would recommend backing them to win to nil here: that’s best priced at 21/20 to Ladbrokes.

Blues in danger of the drop

Birmingham sit in a precarious position going into this match-up, the West Midlanders are among the contenders to be relegated to League One next month, so really need to start picking up some wins so they can pull away from that dreaded bottom three. Garry Monk’s men have won just one of their previous league games so head into this fixture with little momentum. The visitors missed a perfect opportunity to gain some breathing space over their fellow relegation threatened rivals last weekend when they were held by bottom side Burton Albion at St Andrews. Lloyd Dyer put the Brewers ahead just after half-time in that game, before Blues striker Lukas Jutkiewicz rescued a point for Birmingham in the dying minutes. That draw was far from convincing however, and it meant that they went into their next match with Bristol City very low on confidence.

Two first-half goals in 15 minutes from Robins duo Marlon Pack & Bobby Reid ended that game as a contest early on, and although Jutkiewicz pulled one back for the Brum 10 minutes before half-time, Matty Taylors effort on the 84th minute ensured the points were awarded to Bristol City, and Birmingham left Ashton Gate with noting but a flea in their ear. The last time these two sides met it ended in a slender 1-0 victory for Wolves, and we can see them doing the double over their West Midland rivals in this clash. A 3-0 correct score bet is priced at odds of 8/1 with Coral, and we think that could be a decent bet here if you fancy a dabble on a correct score market for this game.
