LYON VS PSG: PREVIEW & PREDICTION

The end of the football season is vastly approaching as the cup finals across Europe’s top five domestic leagues will be of focus this weekend. The Coupe de France final takes place at the weekend as league champions Paris Saint Germain take on Lyon at the Stade Pierre–Mauroy.

          Location: Stade Pierre–Mauroy

          Date: 25/05/2024

          Kick-Off: 8:00 PM

The Coupe de France pits two of the most successful league teams in France against each other. Lyon presided over a dominant period between 2000 and 2010 where the club won an unprecedented seven league titles in a row. In the previous decade, following the new ownership, Paris Saint Germain has been the dominant force in French football having won ten of the last 12 Ligue 1 campaigns.

The final at the weekend between these two sides presents Paris Saint Germain with yet another opportunity to record another domestic double under their ownership and their first domestic double since the 2020/21 season. The league champions were once again the runaway league leaders this season, having won the league title by nine clear points ahead of A.S. Monaco. Their recent league title was their third consecutive championship and their first league title under Luis Enrique.

One of the more intriguing stories surrounding this final will be the future of Paris Saint Germain forward Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman has most recently announced his departure away from the Parc de Princes with an inevitable move to Real Madrid seemingly on the horizon. Mbappe officially signed in 2017 on an initial loan deal which became a permanent deal from A.S. Monaco.

Mbappe’s final league season has resulted in him winning yet another league title for Paris Saint Germain.

After 34 games played this season, Paris Saint Germain finished with 76 points from a possible 102 points. Paris Saint Germain averaged 2.23 points per game this season and obtained a goal difference of 48 – 22 clear of their nearest rivals A.S. Monaco.

Lyon this season has had a mixed campaign at times, however, they’ve recovered well to secure a European place. Lyon finished seventh in Ligue 1 which currently grants them a Europa Conference League place next season.

There could be an opportunity for Lyon to move into the Europa League reckoning for next season, which would potentially require them to win the Coupe de France. Regardless their position in Europe next season is already secured via their league position.

          PSG TEAM NEWS

          RECENT FORM

The recent history between the two sides suggests that the league champions will be the favourites over Lyon next weekend. Paris Saint Germain has won three out of the last five meetings between the two sides, losing once and drawing once in those five games.

This fixture provides an average of 2.72 goals scored per game between the two sides. In the last 20 meetings between the two sides, Paris Saint Germain has been by far the better team historically. Paris Saint Germain has won 14 of the last 20 encounters, having drawn once and lost five.

The two teams have met each other three times in the Coupe de France in the past decade. Paris Saint Germain has won twice and Lyon only once in those three games. Lyon won the first encounter 3-1 in 2012, however, in the two most recent fixtures Paris Saint Germain has been the comfortable winner. In their previous Coup de France meeting, the league champions were 5-1 winners over Lyon which most notably featured a match-winning performance from Kylian Mbappe.

Paris Saint Germain began their Coupe de France campaign with a 9-0 win over US Revel and they followed that up with a 4-1 win away from home against Orleans. The league champions then secured a 3-1 win over Stade Brest to progress into the quarterfinals against OGC Nice. PSG won 3-2 and then followed that up with a 1-0 win in the semi-final against Stade Rennais. Paris Saint Germain is looking to the Coup de France winners for the first time since 2021.

Paris Saint Germain is in terrific form heading into this cup final against Lyon. The league champions have won three out of their last league five games, having drawn once and losing only once. In the league, Paris Saint Germain has averaged 2.21 points per game.

The league champions ended the season unbeaten away from home following their 2-0 victory over FC Metz. Paris Saint Germain have won 64% of their league fixtures this season, having only lost 12% of their fixtures and 6% overall.

Paris Saint Germain has kept up a great scoring average of 2.47 goals per game in the league whilst boasting a great defensive record of having conceded 0.69 goals per game. Kylian Mbappe will hope to make an impact in his final game for the club. The Frenchman has scored 27 goals from 24 league starts this season, scoring once every 80 minutes played.

Lyon’s seventh-placed finish is reflected in their statistics across their domestic performance this season. In their most recent league game, Lyon were 2-1 winners over Strasbourg which confirmed their place in European competition next season. Lyon has played the full 34 games this season and averaged 1.62 points per game this season.

Lyon’s form in general is rather excellent and they have a better record heading into this game than the league champions. Lyon have won four out of their last five games in the league, their most recent league defeat being the 4-1 defeat against Paris Saint Germain in April.

Lyon began their Coupe de France campaign with a 3-0 win over Pontarlier in the round of 64. Lyon then progressed to beat Bergerac Perigord 2-0 and they then followed that up with a 2-1 win over Lille. Lyon beat Strasbourg on penalties in the quarter-final and to secure passage through to the final they beat Valenciennes 3-0 to set up the final against Paris Saint Germain.

Lyon will be hoping to avoid a repeat score-line of the two league games played this season. Paris Saint Germain beat Lyon 4-1 in both league games with Goncalo Ramos scoring twice in the home fixture towards the end of the season.

Former Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette will be important for this game against Paris Saint Germain next weekend. Lacazette finished the season with 19 goals and averaged a goal every 121 minutes in the league campaign.
