Southampton vs Swansea City Prediction

On paper, a meeting between a Premier League side and a Championship side should make an easy win for the Premier League outfit. Still, Southampton's continuous freefall gives us the belief that Swansea City have the chance to drag this game into the depths of Extra Time.

Southampton have suffered three consecutive losses, and the Saints have now gone 11 games in all competitions without a win following their 5-0 home defeat to Brentford at the weekend. Swansea City are coming into this game with two wins on their travels in their previous five, although they have lost consecutive games against Portsmouth (4-0) and Hull City (2-1).

The Jacks haven't kept a clean sheet in their last three matches, and both sides have scored in eight of the previous ten encounters. Considering this, we are favouring a draw for the upcoming game. Southampton’s ongoing struggles are unlikely to improve soon, giving Swansea City ample chances to take advantage of their weaknesses.

Southampton vs Swansea City Preview & Prediction

Ivan Juric is still looking for his first win as Southampton manager, as the Saints host a Swansea City side who have been performing admirably this season in the Championship.

Date: 12/01/2025
Location: St.Mary’s Stadium, Southampton.
Kick-Off: 16:30 pm

Southampton have had a woeful return back to the Premier League this season, as the Saints look on course to break some unwanted records during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign. The hosts have had a managerial change, prompted by the 5-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur, which saw the managerial duties of Russell Martin no longer required at St.Mary’s. Former AS Roma manager Ivan Juric was hired by the club rooted at the foot of the Premier League table. However, results have not changed in the immediate future since his arrival.

Southampton are bottom of the Premier League, with only six points and a points average of 0.32 per game. This current rate would see the Saints eclipse the record held by Derby County from 2007/08. In last year’s competition, Southampton reached the round of 16 in the FA Cup before being knocked out by Carabao Cup winners Liverpool. The Saints are most notably recognised in this competition for their unprecedented final win in 1976, where they were the second-division outfit who bested Manchester United at Wembley, thanks to a single goal from Bobby Stokes.

Swansea City are currently two places better off their overall league position from last season, as the Jacks are 12th in the Championship. The visitors have been slowly progressing at times, with only a couple of wins potentially moving the visitors within reach of a play-off place, with the nature of the points differential in the league.

Swansea City have won a major trophy more recently than their hosts, with their EFL Cup triumph in 2013, marking their first major trophy in the 101-year history of the club. Last season, Bournemouth stopped any chance of the Jacks succeeding in both domestic competitions with a 3-2 defeat in the EFL Cup and 5-0 loss in this competition at the fourth round stage last campaign.

Where to watch

The game will be available on BBC Sport and BBC I-Player.

Form Guide

The recent history between the two teams suggests that Southampton will find a stroke of luck and secure a first win under Ivan Juric. Southampton have won the last five meetings between the two teams, and are unbeaten in their last six against Swansea City. The two sides, who will likely be meeting twice more next season, last met last season, where the Saints recorded the league double. The fixture at St.Mary’s ended in a resounding 5-0 win for the hosts, with goals from Joe Aribo, Samuel Edozie, Ryan Fraser (x2) and Che Adams.

Southampton have suffered three consecutive losses, and the Saints have now gone 11 games in all competitions without a win following their 5-0 home defeat to Brentford at the weekend. The hosts have also been showing huge frailties defensively, conceding first in eight of their previous ten games in all competitions and their last home win taking place against Everton at the start of November.

Since the win against Everton, Ivan Juric’s side have now lost their previous six consecutive games on home soil and have held significantly damaging defeats against the likes of Chelsea (1-5) and Tottenham Hotspur (0-5). Southampton have not scored in three of their last five home games and come into this game, having only picked up one point since the fixture against Everton in the Premier League.

Swansea City are coming into this game with two wins on their travels in their previous five, although they have lost consecutive games against Portsmouth (4-0) and Hull City (2-1). The Jacks had recorded consecutive victories against Luton Town (2-1) and QPR (3-0). Away from home, Swansea City ranks tenth based on form, with four wins, two draws and seven losses.
