PSV vs Liverpool Prediction

Liverpool have been in perfect form in the Champions League so far this season, winning 7 from 7, scoring 15 and conceding just 2 goals.

Both teams have little to play for, and with PSV espousing an open style of play which leads to plenty of goals, there should be goals in this game. Liverpool are sure to rotate but still possess plenty of fire power on the bench.

PSV are missing star centre back Ryan Flamingo due to suspension (he was sent off in the previous round vs Red Star) and that will make them vulnerable at the back.

Liverpool 3 - 1 PSV

PSV vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

With little to play for, this match could see heavy rotation from Liverpool, who nonetheless should have enough quality to overpower PSV.

Date: 29/01/25

Kick-off time: 20:00

Venue: Philips Stadion

Liverpool have taken full advantage of Man City's fall from grace this season. They sit top of the Premier League table, six points clear of Arsenal (with a game in hand because of the postponed Mersyside Derby), and their goal difference of +33 is 10 goals better than any other team.

They've scored 9 more goals than second highest scorers Chelsea, and conceded the joint least goals (21, tied with Arsenal).

In this competition they've achieved a perfect record so far and are guaranteed to head into the round of 16. With a number of big name teams underperforming and likely to be lower seeds than usual then their high seed (they'll get either first or second) isn't as beneficial as it may typically be but Liverpool are in such good form that the Reds will be happy to face anyone in the next round.

PSV have been having a similarly impressive season in the Dutch league. While Ajax remain hot on their heels, just 4 points behind with a game in hand, PSV have topped the league since day one, scoring goals for fun and averaging over 3 goals scored per match.

Their last 7 games in all competitions have finished 3-2, 3-2, 1-3, 5-4 (after ET), 2-2, 3-0 & 8-0; a seriously impressive 38 goals providing plenty of entertainment for the fans.

Where to Watch

The match will be shown live on TNT Sports 3.

Team News

PSV

Ex-Spurs winger is ineligible for the Champions League, with Noa Lang likely to replace him in the starting line up after being rested on the weekend.

Ryan Flamingo was sent off versus Red Star and is suspended, while Malick Tillman, Sergino Dest, Adamo Nagalo and Couhaib Driouech are all injured.

Liverpool

Expect a lot of rotation from Arne Slot with Liverpool already being guaranteed a top two finish in the new Champions League setup with key players likely to be rested ahead of this weekend's clash with Bournemouth. Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas will all be hoping for starts.

Curtis Jones aces a late fitness test. Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez will both miss the match.

Form Guide

PSV

As mentioned, PSV's games this season have all been extremely high scoring. Their last match, versus NAC Breda, was no exception.

After a shock opened by the visitors, PSV replied twice in the first half, before making certain in the 94th minute, although there was still time for a 96th minute consolation.

During the match they created 4 major chances, took 23 shots, and it was only some impressive goalkeeping which kept the score as close as it ended up being.

What is even more impressive is their rotation through the season; only 3 players (including the suspended Ryan Flamingo) have played more than 1,350 minutes in the league this season (15 full games out of 20).

Manager Peter Bosz has fully utilised his deep range of attacking options, with five players scoring more than 6 league goals. Ricardo Pepi has been their secret weapon off the bench scoring a hugely impressive 11 goals in just 683 minutes, but he's struggled to start in front of club legend Luuk de Jong - who himself is having an excellent season, scoring 9 and assisting 5 times.

Liverpool

The Reds travel to the Netherlands off the back of a 4-1 victory over Ipswich powered by a standout performance by Dutchman Cody Gakpo who scored twice and assisted once in a match which was totally dominated by Liverpool.

Their last five matches have all seen similar levels of control; only poor finishing vs Lille in the previous round of the Champions League saw the match finish as close as the 2-1 scoreline suggests.

Versus Brentford two weeks ago they peppered Mark Flekken's goal with a massive 37 shots - the joint sixth most shots in a Premier League match ever.

The only two blips on their recent record are a 1-1 draw against Forest, another match where they outperformed their opposition but failed to prove clinical in the final third, and a 1-0 loss at Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi final.

There, they outpassed their opposition (565 vs 377) but had an off day otherwise. That said it was only a controversial late winner for Spurs which gave them the advance, and Liverpool will be confident that they can correct the record in the return leg at Anfield next week.
