Leeds United vs Sunderland Prediction

Leeds United enter Monday night’s clash with Sunderland as favourites as they sit seven points clear of the Black Cats, while also being the Championship’s top scorers with 66 goals in 32 matches, a mere 16 goals more than second top scorers, Middlesbrough and Norwich.

Daniel Farke’s men also have the best home record in the Championship, as they have accumulated 41 points from 16 matches, winning 13, drawing two and losing just once, while finding the back of the net 42 times and conceding just seven.

Sunderland have the fourth-best away record in the Championship, but, they have failed to win more than half of their 16 matches away from the Stadium of Light (won seven, drawn five and lost four).

Prediction: Leeds United 3-1 Sunderland

Leeds United vs Sunderland Prediction & Preview

Top of the table, Leeds United goes head-to-head with fourth-place Sunderland at Elland Road in Monday night’s Championship action.

Date: 17/02/2025

Location: Elland Road

Time: 8pm

When these two sides last met back on 4th October, the game resulted in a 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light, as Chris Rigg’s ninth-minute goal was cancelled out by strikes from Joel Piroe and Junior Firpo, before the latter scored a dramatic own goal in the 97th-minute via howler from Illan Meslier.

As previously mentioned, Daniel Farke’s side have an excellent record at Elland Road, a record that they will be confident of maintaining as they sit five points clear of third-place Burnley while playing an entertaining brand of football that sees them average 2.06 goals per game while conceding just 0.59 goals per game.

The Elland Road club actually had a slightly slow start to the season, having won just two of their first five matches, however, their latest burst of form has been mightily impressive, as they’re currently on a 14-game unbeaten run, winning ten and drawing four of those matches with the pick of those results being the 7-0 thrashing of Cardiff City on 1st February.

In terms of cup competitions, Leeds have no distractions from their league campaign as they exited the FA Cup in the Fourth Round via a 2-0 defeat to Millwall.

Sunderland are having an impressive campaign under ex-Lorient manager Regis Le Bris, vastly improving on last season’s 16th-place finish, having already earned six more points (62) while challenging for the automatic promotion places as they sit five points behind second-place Sheffield United.

The Black Cats were the in-form team as they won nine and drew one of their first 12 league matches this season, however, their run of three wins in 12 games between 2nd November and 29th December reeled them back into the chasing pack behind them.

Something that Sunderland will be desperate to maintain, is the fact that they are unbeaten in the Championship since the start of the year, having won five and drawn three of these matches. Like Leeds, the visitors are out of the FA Cup, having suffered a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City in the Third Round.

Form Guide

Leeds United

Farke’s men have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five matches, with their defeat coming at the hands of Millwall in the FA Cup, while their last three league matches have seen them earn emphatic wins over Watford (4-0), Coventry City (2-0) and Cardiff City (7-0) with Brenden Aaronson, Manor Solomon, Dan James, Joel Piroe (2), Wilfried Gnonto and Mateo Joseph getting on the scoresheet against the Bluebirds.

The first game in this sequence of results saw Leeds draw 0-0 with Burnley at Turf Moor.

Sunderland

Sunderland are unbeaten in their last five matches, having won three and drawn two.

The visitors recently earned a 2-0 win over Luton Town thanks to goals by Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor. Their other victories in this run have come against Middlesbrough (3-2) and Derby County (1-0), while drawing 2-2 at home with both Plymouth Argyle and Watford.
