Portsmouth vs Millwall Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Portsmouth host Millwall in this rearranged fixture following floodlights failure and will be desperate to improve after a midweek hammering at the hands of West Brom. Their defence capitulated after the first goal went in, but it's worth noting they won their two previous fixtures and are in much better form at home.

In fact, they've lost just two of their past 19 home league games, winning ten of those. Millwall have been in inconsistent form away from home, losing four of their last 9 away league matches, including defeats to 15th placed Oxford and 19th placed Hull.

Pompey will rotate back in several players who were rested on the weekend and a return to their home stadium should see a better performance. Portsmouth and Milwall have seen over 2.5 goals in four and three of their last 5 matches respectively, including in six of Portsmouth's last 7 home matches.

Portsmouth vs Millwall Preview & Prediction

A bottom half clash in the Championship on a windy Tuesday evening could prove vital to Portsmouth in their bid to pull away from the relegation zone.

Date: 28/01/2025

Time: 19:45

Location: Fratton Park

Portsmouth saw their return to form - two home wins against Middlesborough and Stoke - rudely interrupted by a resurgent West Brom team. In truth, the match was never really a contest, and Portsmouth's players found themselves booed off by the home support at half time, trailing 4-0.

Fratton Park has been a safe haven for Pompey this season; they sit 14th in the home league table, winning their last four in a row, and taking 22 points from their 13 matches. Their away form is the problem; gaining just 7 points from 15 matches, they have lost their last 6 away matches in a row, leaving them precariously close to the drop in 21st place.

Manager John Mousinho will regret the five changes he made following their win at Stoke, with midfielder Potts and winger Josh Murphy both sorely missed, but with the congested schedule (this is Pompey's 4th match in 10 days, and they have another match on Saturday) this is a much more winnable match than Saturday's.

Millwall sit 5 places higher in the league, in a slightly more comfortable 16th place, although they remain at risk of getting dragged into a relegation scrap. They withstood late pressure from Luton on Saturday to hold on to a narrow 1-0 victory, although if Aaron Connolly had converted their 34th minute penalty it could have been a more comfortable match for the visitors.

The majority of their players will be playing their fourth game in ten days, including Casper de Norre, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Bryan.

Team News

Portsmouth

The home team will continue to miss Ibane Bowat, Regan Poole & Anthony Scully, who have all yet to play in 2025.

Expect the changes to ring after last match, with Callum Lang, Freddie Potts and Josh Murphy all likely to return to the starting line up.

Millwall

Both Lukas Jensen and Calum Scanlon were subbed off versus Luton, and neither are expected to return immediately according to the manager's comments.

Form Guide

Portsmouth

Having been stuck in the bottom three for the vast majority of the season, including multiple weeks rock bottom, Portsmouth finally scrambled towards safety with back to back wins before their chastising West Brom defeat.

Pompey fans have had a rough time of it this year. Their attack has been productive, outscoring the majority of other teams in the bottom half, but defensive frailties have been continually exposed; they have the second worst defensive record in the league, conceding nearly two goals per game on average.

Unsurprisingly, the step up from League One to Championship football has been a difficult one. Isaac Hayden is a solid signing, bringing extensive experience and linking up with ex-teammate Matt Ritchie.

Millwall

Millwall's only consistency this season has been...inconsistency. They started the season extremely poorly, winning just one of their first five matches, before a good run in October saw them peek into the playoff places in November.

However, that was as good as it would get for the Lions. Since then, they have steadily slipped down the table. If only results from the last 10 matches were taken into account, they would sit 19th, keeping a clean sheet in just 3 matches.

Their main struggles have been in front of goal; they are the second lowest scorers in the Championship this season, averaging less than one goal per game. A solid defence has helped reduce the impact of this, but they have conceded two goals twice in their last four games, and may be vulnerable again today with tired legs from the sheer volume of games at this time of year.
