Sheffield Wednesday vs Sunderland Prediction

Both of these sides come into this match off the back of two consecutive defeats. The home side's promising start to the season has been flattened by recent form, with only one win in their last five matches. Their fixtures at Hillsborough have been full of goals at both ends, with an average of 3.8 goals in their last five, failing to keep a clean sheet here since the end of 2024.

It's a similar story for Sunderland, who will be looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats for the first time this season. The visitors strolled to a comfortable 3-0 victory last time they played at Hillsborough, and beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in the return leg earlier this season. However they have only managed one clean sheet in their last six matches, so their is potential for a high scoring affair here. Sheffield Wednesday 2-3 Sunderland

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sunderland Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips

Sunderland's march for promotion continues at Hillsborough as they face Sheffield Wednesday

  • Date: 28/02/25
  • Kick-off time: 20:00
  • Location: Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield

Sheffield Wednesday currently sit 12th in the Championship, after what looked to be a incredible start to the season, has since calmed down. The Owls are still having a good season, after only just staying in the division with victory on the last day of the 23/24 campaign. They currently sit six points off a potential play off spot, but with recent form slowing their promotion hopes down, the task is becoming increasingly unlikely.

Young Manager Danny Rohl is doing a fantastic job with the Owls. Opting to stay at the club when struggling Premier League side Southampton came calling earlier this season. However, since being nominated as manager of the month in December, Wednesday have only managed three wins in their last 12 matches, failing to keep a clean sheet in eight of their last ten.

The recent head to head record between these sides favours the visitors. With Sunderland winning two of the last three meetings, including a 4-0 victory earlier this season and 3-0 win at Hillsborough last season.

Sunderland boss Régis Le Bris has worked wonders for the black cats. Putting his faith in young stars such as Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg has payed off, with 12 goal contributions between them this campaign.

There will be calls for goalkeeper Anthony Patterson to be dropped after his howler in the last match vs Hull, which ensured a 1-0 loss to Hull, putting his place in the staring 11 under threat.

A win for Sunderland could be massive in strengthening a play off spot, potentially going 14 points clear of 8th place if they manage a win on Friday. With every Sunderland fan hoping that they can return to the top flight after 8 seasons.

Both sides will be relying on their impressive goalscoring form to carry them through this game, with clean sheets becoming more difficult to hold onto recently. The away side have conceded in four of their five matches in February, meaning that we could be looking at an exciting game with end to end action.

Recent Form Guide

With whispers of star man Josh Windass departing the club in the January window finally being placed in the past, Wednesday looked like they could start plastering over their bad winter form, winning two matches in the first month of the year. However, this is proving to be a harder task than it seems, with only one win in February so far. Their previous four fixtures have consisted of three losses, conceding eight goals during this period.

One area they can celebrate though is their goalscoring form at home. They have bagged ten goals in their last five at Hillsborough, only failing to score in two of their last 12. So far this campaign, they have averaged just over 1.5 goals per match at home, which is the 6th highest in the League. Unfortunately, The Owls have been let down by their poor defensive record, which has seen them concede 17 goals in their last ten, only winning two matches in this time.

Sunderland will be confident going into this match away from home, they currently have the 4th best away record in the league, only losing three of their last 13. Despite losing their last match on the road curtesy of a last second header against Leeds, Sunderland can take some positives out of their recent form.

Wilson Isidor is in brilliant form. The French forwards has five goal contributions in his last six starts, making it 13 for the season. Before their slight dip in form, Sunderland had only lost one match in their previous nine, playing the Likes of Burnley and beating Sheffield United in this period.

Régis Le Bris' Side have seen plenty of goals in their games recently, with an average of three goals in each of their last five, which is a massive increase on the average of 2.4 across the entirety of the season.
