Sunderland vs Coventry Prediction

Given how evenly matched the two sides were in the first leg, and how Sunderland managed a slender lead at the CBS Arena, we believe that this game will follow a similar pattern, with both sides cancelling each other out and Sunderland progressing to the final on an aggregate scoreline.

Sunderland had the sixth-best home record in the Championship, with only four losses from 23 matches and 43 points gained from 69 available. The Black Cats are coming into this game, winless in their previous three matches at the Stadium of Light, failing to score in each of those three games.

Coventry City’s away record in the regular season of the Championship was less than desirable, with the Sky Blues having only won six matches from 23 on the road, losing 11. Frank Lampard’s side head into this game with three defeats in their previous five matches.

Sunderland have not kept a clean sheet in six matches, so goals are expected in this fixture, especially considering Over 2.5 goals have been scored in five of the last six meetings between the two sides.

Coventry’s away record doesn’t bode well for this fixture, and given how the two teams were separated in the first leg, we can see a 2-2 draw with Sunderland progressing to the playoff final.

Sunderland 2-2 Coventry City (Sunderland 4-3 Coventry)

Sunderland vs Coventry Preview & Prediction

Sunderland hold a slender lead coming into the second leg against Coventry City, as Frank Lampard will be looking for more playoff heroics at the Stadium of Light.

Date: 13/05/2025
Location: Stadium of Light, Sunderland.
Kick-Off: 8 pm

The first leg at the CBS Arena was an evenly contested affair, although Coventry City would have been devastated in the way they conceded so late on in the tie. Coventry City had 74% of the ball, but only created one big chance in the entire game, which led to their goal. Sunderland, on the other hand, created more opportunities despite having less of the ball.

The Black Cats took the lead through a counter-attacking opportunity in the 68th minute, when Wilson Isidor raced through on goal to give the visitors the lead. Two minutes later, Jack Rudoni placed a well-timed header past Anthony Patterson to restore parity. A mistake from Milan van Ewijk allowed Eliezer Mayenda to capitalise and secure an away win for Sunderland with two minutes to go.

Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has enjoyed a successful debut season in charge of the Black Cats, leading his side to fourth place in the Championship. A position they had held for several weeks during the latter stages of the season. Sunderland accumulated 76 points in the division, winning 21, drawing 13 and losing 12 of their 46 matches.

Frank Lampard has managed in the playoffs before with Derby County, where they famously overcame Leeds United in the semi-finals in one of the most fiercely contested playoff ties in recent memory. His Derby County side fell short in the final following a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

Lampard joined Coventry City midway through the season and has led the Sky Blues into the top six, with a win against Middlesbrough on the final day securing their position. The Sky Blues accumulated 69 points in the regular season, winning 20 of their 46 matches.

Form Guide

Sunderland:

Sunderland are coming into this game, having recorded a 2-1 victory against Coventry City in the first leg. This win ended an unwanted record for the Black Cats of six games without a win, including five consecutive losses for the home side. Sunderland had suffered defeats against QPR (0-1), Oxford United (2-0), Blackburn Rovers (0-1), Bristol City (2-1) and Swansea City (0-1).

As mentioned, Régis Le Bris’ side had the sixth-best home record in the division, but have lost their last three home matches, with their last home win taking place at the end of March against Millwall (1-0).

Coventry City:

Frank Lampard’s side head into this game with three defeats in their previous five matches. The Sky Blues had lost two consecutive games against Luton Town (1-0) and Plymouth Argyle (3-1), with victories on either side of those games against Middlesbrough (2-0) and West Bromwich Albion (2-0).

Away from home, Frank Lampard’s side needs to show improvement in order to get a result against the Black Cats. Coventry City have lost four of their previous five matches away from home, and had only won six away games from 23 in the regular season.
