Birmingham City vs Peterborough United Prediction

Following the league fixture in midweek and the subsequent form of both of these sides, expect Birmingham City to secure the first leg of their league and cup double at the weekend, when they face Peterborough United.

The league fixture between the two sides resulted in a 2-1 victory for the Blues, but an important thing to note is that with the quality and depth of their squad, they were able to rest players in midweek, so they are likely to be a stronger outfit at the weekend.

The win in midweek extended Birmingham City’s record to four consecutive victories and no losses in their previous seven matches. Peterborough United were able to strike against Birmingham City in midweek, with the Blues now six games without a clean sheet.

Peterborough United will be missing key defensive players such as Tayo Edun, Carl Johnston and Sam Hughes. The latter of which has been excellent for the Posh, as the on-loan Stockport County defender has helped the club to five clean sheets in a two-month spell, with the Posh having previously gone since August without a shutout.

We can’t look past Birmingham City in this fixture. Despite the Posh having an impressive record of being unbeaten at Wembley in their three appearances thus far, with the return of key players for Birmingham City, we predict a 3-1 win here.

Birmingham City 3-1 Peterborough United.

Birmingham City vs Peterborough United Preview & Prediction

The second domestic trophy of the season is up for grabs in the EFL this weekend, as current holders Peterborough United are looking to make history as they defend their title against big-spending Birmingham City, who are on course for a league and cup double.

Date: 13/04/2025
Location: Wembley, London.
Kick-Off: 3pm

Birmingham City’s expected promotion back to the second tier of English football was confirmed in midweek with a 2-1 victory against Peterborogh United. The Blues were heavy favourites at the start of the campaign due to their lavish spending, which evidently worked for the Midlands club after they suffered the ignominy of relegation in the last campaign.

Birmingham City, led by former Tottenham Hotspur coach Chris Davies, are currently sat on 95 points after 40 matches played. They have only six games remaining to secure the league title, which they can potentially secure when they face Crawley Town at home in the next league match. The Blues will also have one eye on the points record, currently held by Wolves (103), from which they will need only nine points from their six remaining games.

As for Peterborough United, they had a disappointing league campaign, however, with extenuating circumstances. The Posh had finished inside the playoffs the last two seasons and yet had seen their squad stripped of their prized assets with Ronnie Edwards, Harrison Burrows, Jonson Clarke-Harris, Josh Knight and Ephron Mason-Clark all departing from the Weston Homes Stadium.

This season, Darren Ferguson’s side were almost embroiled in a relegation battle, with the side at one point only two points clear of relegation candidates Burton Albion. However, a run of eight games undefeated in all competitions, including seven games in the league, has steered the East Anglian outfit clear of the drop, with only a remarkable set of results potentially dragging them down.

The Posh can make history on Sunday, as being the first side to record consecutive EFL Trophy victories and tie level with Bristol City in being the most successful side in this competition.

Team News

Birmingham City Team News

The Blues rested players such as Jay Stansfield, Keshi Anderson and Kieran Dowell in midweek, so expect them to feature in the EFL Trophy Final at the weekend. Grant Hanley is also set to start after being a 97th-minute substitute when the two teams met on Tuesday.

Peterborough United Team News

Peterborough United will be without the services of Carl Johnston, Sam Hughes and Tayo Edun for the final since all three are cup-tied. Harley Mills would have been expected to fill in for Edun regardless, following Edun’s dismissal against Northampton Town.

Form Guide

Birmingham City:

Birmingham City are in excellent form heading into the final, with four consecutive wins for the Blues. Despite resting players midweek, the Blues secured a 2-1 win against Peterborough United in midweek, with goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman. The Blues have also recorded further victories against Barnsley (6-2), Bristol Rovers (1-2) and Shrewsbury Town (4-1).

Birmingham City’s road to the final has included victories against Bradford City (2-1), Stevenage (0-1), Swindon Town (1-2) and Exeter City (1-2). The Blues have won both league meetings against the Posh (3-2 & 1-2) and have scored first in eight of their previous nine games.

Peterborough United:

Peterborough United’s form has dropped since their eight-game unbeaten run, with the Posh now losing three of their previous five matches. The Posh are coming into this game with successive defeats against Birmingham City (1-2) and an embarrassing 4-0 home loss to local rivals Northampton Town.

Darren Ferguson’s side beat Wrexham on penalties in the semi-final of this competition, as well as further victories against Cheltenham Town (3-2), Walsall (4-2) and Northampton Town (3-0). An advantage for the Posh in this fixture, is that they have scored first in four of the last five meetings between the two teams.
