Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction

Manchester City enter this game as firm favourites to win that match as they have a far superior squad than their opponents.

City were boosted by the return of Erling Haaland in midweek, as the Norwegian scored the only goal of the game in their 1-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, Plymouth also have the worst away record in the Championship, as they have failed to win any of their 17 matches away from Home Park.

Pep Guardiola’s side have the fourth-best home record in the Premier League, having earned 26 points from 13 matches, and will be confident of earning an emphatic win over a Plymouth side that have leaked 68 goals in 34 Championship matches.

Prediction: Manchester City 4-0 Plymouth Argyle

Manchester City vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction & Preview

Manchester City hosts Plymouth Argyle at the Etihad Stadium in what is expected to be a very one-sided contest in the Fifth Round of this season’s FA Cup.

Date: 01/03/2025

Location: Etihad Stadium

Time: 5:45pm

This will be the first meeting between City and Plymouth since they faced off in the old Second Division at Maine Road back in February 1989, with the Cityzens running out as 2-0 victors on that occasion.

Pep Guardiola will be putting extra emphasis on this competition, as it is Manchester City’s only chance of winning silverware between now and the end of the season. So far in this season’s competition, they have thrashed Salford City 8-0 and scraped a 2-1 win away at Leyton Orient.

In the Premier League, City are fourth in the table with 47 points from 27 matches, seeing them sit just five points above 10th-place Aston Villa, demonstrating just how tight the top half of the league is.

City are out of all of the other competitions that they entered, having suffered a 6-3 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid in the Round of 32 after a dismal group stage showing that saw them scrape through in 22nd-place, having accumulated just 11 points from eight matches.

Meanwhile, their League Cup campaign saw them exit in the Fourth Round as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur having managed to progress past Watford in the Third Round.

On the other hand, Plymouth Argyle will be aiming for another FA Cup giant killing having managed to knock two Premier League outfits out of the FA Cup thus far, having beaten both Brentford and Liverpool via 1-0 scorelines, with Ryan Hardie being the goalscoring hero against the latter mentioned side.

It has been a season of struggle for Plymouth this campaign, as they have earned just 30 points from 34 Championship matches, seeing them sit three points adrift of 21st-place Hull City. The Mariners started the season under the management of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, however, the 39-year-old was sacked in late December, having won just five of his 25 matches in charge of the club.

Since then, Miron Muslic has taken over the reins at Home Park and has made Argyle a much more solid outfit, having won three and drawn four of his first ten matches in charge.

Form Guide

Manchester City

Manchester City enter this game with just two wins from their last five matches, having suffered two defeats to Real Madrid (3-2 & 3-1) on either side of a 4-0 home win against Newcastle United.

Since then, Guardiola’s men have suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool before beating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 thanks to a goal from Erling Haaland.

Plymouth Argyle

On the other hand, Plymouth have drawn their last two matches 1-1 against Cardiff City and Luton Town after a 2-0 defeat away at Blackburn Rovers.

Argyle’s last victory came on 12th February when they thrashed Millwall 5-1 thanks to goals from Joe Bryan (own goal), Ryan Hardie (2), Mustapha Bundu and Nikola Katic. Prior to that game, Plymouth had beaten Liverpool 1-0 at Home Park in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup.
