England kick-off their World Cup qualifying campaign against Albania on Friday night, in what will be Thomas Tuchel’s first game as manager of the Three Lions.
Date: 21/03/2025
Location: Wembley Stadium
Time: 7:45pm
The last time these two sides faced off was back in November 2021 where England ran out as comfortable 5-0 winners, as the likes of Harry Maguire, Harry Kane (3) and Jordan Henderson all got on the scoresheet.
Tuchel’s reign as England manager will be met with lofty expectations, with the Three Lions finishing as runners-up at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, on top of the fact that the German has a terrific coaching pedigree, having managed to win 11 major honours during his career, including the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2020/21.
England will be expected to comfortably top Group K ahead of the likes of Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra, especially after a positive Nations League campaign under Lee Carsley that saw them win five of their six matches while playing a significantly better brand of football than that which played under Gareth Southgate.
On the other hand, Albania’s European Championship campaign was an interesting one, as they finished fourth in Group B with one points from three matches, however, it must be said that they did give the likes of Italy and Croatia good competitive games.
Sylvinho’s side were one of the surprise packages in the lead up to Euro 2024, as they actually finished top of Group E ahead of the likes of the Czech Republic and Poland.
As far as the Nations League goes, Albania suffered relegation from League B Group 1 with seven points from six matches - seeing them finish fourth behind Georgia, the Ukraine and Czechia.
