Wales kick-off their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a home match against Kazakhstan in Group J.
Date: 22/03/2025
Location: Cardiff City Stadium
Time: 7:45pm
Surprisingly, this is the first competitive meeting between Wales and Kazakhstan. This fixture presents a huge opportunity for Wales, as Group J contains the likes of Belgium, North Macedonia, Kazakhstan and Liechtenstein, meaning that there is a viable opportunity for the Dragons at least finish second-place and maybe even challenge Belgium for top spot should the Red Devils continue to falter.
Craig Bellamy will be determined to lead Wales to just their third-ever World Cup and will want to keep his side on the positive form they found themselves in during the Nations League, having topped League B Group 4 ahead of Turkey, Iceland and Montenegro with 12 points from six matches.
Prior to the Nations League, Rob Page was in charge of the Wales national team, however, they didn’t feature at Euro 2024 as they suffered a penalty shootout loss to Poland on home soil in the final of the qualifying play-offs after a 0-0 draw. The Welsh did have an awkward group to navigate their way through for Euro 2024, as they finished in third-place behind Turkey and Croatia.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan nearly managed to shock the world in Euro 2024 qualifying, as they earned 18 points from 10 matches in Group H, finishing behind the likes of Denmark and Slovenia by just four points. However, in the play-off semi-final they were drawn up to play Greece, of which they suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat.
League B Group 3 of the Nations League proved to be too strong for Kazakhstan, as they finished bottom with just one point, having finished behind Slovenia, Austria and Norway.
