Football is all about winning whether you're a fan, player or manager. Trophies and medals are what everyone in the game aims for whether thats with your team or at a personal level. Winning honours such as the Premier League or Champions League are massive achievements but one that every player aspires to pick up is the Ballon D'or. This accolade is the most coveted in world football and you have to be playing at a ridiculously consistent level in order to attain it.
For years it's been dominated by two players in particular, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The pair of them have been a million miles ahead of any other player in world football and it's shown by their hold on the Ballon D'or, with one of them two winning it since 2008. It's an incredible statistic and the rivalry between them two has been a fantastic watch over the years, but 2018 has signalled a change.
Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric has managed to overthrow the duo and win the award after a superb 2017/18 campaign. He won the Champions League along with guiding Croatia to an unlikely appearance in the World Cup Final where they were beaten by France - so all in all a pretty decent year!
