The earliest piece of silverware on offer in the English football season is the EFL Cup and it's one of the newer tournaments on the calendar. Founded in 1960, the EFL Cup gives all 92 professional football clubs (Premier League-League Two) in England the chance to go all the way and lift the trophy at Wembley Stadium. That makes this competition unique and it's also the timing of the final, which usually comes in late February/early March. Some clubs see it as a distraction with it not considered one of the biggest competitions around, but winning it can give your season a timely boost heading into the home straight.
Last season was a prime example of that, with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City winning the Cup after a thumping 3-0 win over Arsenal at the national stadium before going on to storm their way to the Premier League title. Many clubs field rotated sides during the tournament but once it reaches the latter stages they all want to go all the way, which often results in some great games.
This years EFL Cup is drawing ever closer to its conclusion and after Tuesday nights action, we now know 2 of this seasons 4 semi-finalists in holders Manchester City and surprise package Burton Albion - who've reached this stage for the first time in their history.
