One of the most highly-anticipated events on the annual sporting calendar is the Champions League final, where the two strongest sides out of all major European leagues are pitted against each other in a winner takes all encounter. Real Madrid have been best known for their successes in the tournament over recent years, with plenty of that being down to the efforts of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Whether it’s a typical cup winner in that all-important final game, or an underdog that defied the odds in order to make it so far, it’s always an exciting battle that even those who dislike football take the time out to watch.
Last year’s game saw yet another enticing locking of horns, as the impenetrable defensive force that is Juventus took on the unstoppable attacking superpower that is Real Madrid. Both sides had earned their right to be there through some challenging quarter and semi finals – Juventus seeing off both Barcelona and Monaco to push through to that final, while Real Madrid had to defeat regular Bundesliga victors Bayern Munich and local derby rival Atletico Madrid. It was no shock that Real Madrid lifted the trophy yet again but, while many revel in their monopoly over Europe in recent years, plenty of others are hoping that someone stands up to them in this current campaign.
