Though Croatia are not the outright favourites to win the Euros they can never be counted out in tournament football with their appearances in the 2018 World Cup Final and the 2022 World Cup Semi Final.
The assured presence of the likes of Luka Modrić, Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol give Croatia a strong through line as all three have been important to their club sides this season.
Croatia first made their debut at the European Championships in 1996 when the tournament was held in England. Here they made the Quarter Finals where they lost 2 - 1 to eventual winners Germany. The Vatreni picked up another Quarter Finals appearance in the 2008 Championships in Austria and Switzerland, losing 3 - 1 on penalties to Turkey.
Since 2008, Croatia have crashed out at the Group stage in 2012 and the Round of 16 at the two most recent Championships, losing to eventual winners Portugal in 2016 and losing to Spain in 2020.
Croatia also stumbled somewhat through the qualifying campaign. In Group D, The Vatreni took on Turkey, Wales, Armenia and Latvia, a group some would expect Croatia to win comfortably. However, in eight games, Croatia only picked up five wins, one draw and two losses, leaving them second to Turkey.
