Scotland only have 100/1 odds to outright win the European Championships this summer, but their recent form and who they have been up against suggest that The Tartan Army may be a bigger threat than this suggests.
The form of the likes of John McGinn, Scott McTominay and Che Adams this season bodes well for Scotland as all three have performed in domestic competitions this season.
Scotland do not have the best history at the Euros, failing to get past the Group stage in their three attempts.
The debut appearance for Scotland at the European Championships was back in 1992 in Sweden. Scotland were drawn into Group 2 along with the Netherlands, Germany and CIS (the Soviet Union). In three games, Scotland picked up one win and two losses, leaving them on two points and out of the tournament.
The following tournament in England in 1996 saw Scotland yet again drawn against the Netherlands along with England and Switzerland. The Tartan Army grabbed one win, one draw and one loss in three games, a point haul of four, the same as the Netherlands. Both sides had the same head-to-head record and Scotland were eliminated based on goals scored.
14 years later, Scotland took on England again in the Group stage, this time joined by Croatia and the Czech Republic. However, Scotland picked up one draw and two losses, leaving them on one point, bottom of the group and eliminated.
Scotland were much better in their qualifying campaign for this summer’s tournament. In Group A Scotland took on Spain, Norway, Georgia and Cyprus and in eight games, Scotland picked up five wins, two draws and one loss, leaving them on 17 points and second, securing qualification.
