Cardiff City vs Sunderland - Prediction

Based on the previous meetings between these two sides, we are expecting a tight and cagey affair. The last five meetings between these two sides have all resulted in wins to nil and both sides have only scored in one of the last seven meetings.

Cardiff City have had the superior pre-season, having recorded impressive victories over Hamburger SV and Reading. Whilst Sunderland come into this game on the back of a sub-par preseason which has included defeats to Gateshead and Eldense.

We predict Sunderland to win 2-0.

Cardiff City vs Sunderland - Prediction, Preview & Betting Tips

The wait is over. The Championship kicks off with a classic clash as Cardiff and Sunderland lock horns at the Cardiff City Stadium. The game is set to kick off at 12:30pm on Saturday 10th August, where both sides will be eager to set the tone for the season.

Cardiff City manager Erol Bulut will be aiming to extend his successful tenure as the Bluebirds’ manager with a good campaign this time round.

On teh other side of the dugout, new Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris will be aiming to make a statement in his first game in English football. Known for his impressive work developing young talent during his tenure at Lorient, Le Bris brings a fresh perspective to the Championship.

While his time in Ligue 1 ended in relegation, it's important to note that Lorient significantly overachieved under his guidance.

It is Sunderland who come into this match as away favourites and they are currently priced @ 29/10 to win, whilst a home win for Cardiff is priced @ 19/10 and a draw is @ 21/10.

We believe that this game is likely to result in a win to nil given the recent history between these two slides. There is good value in Cardiff to win to nil given their impressive form in pre-season paired with the inexperience of Régis Le Bris in English football. Both teams not to score could also be a good shout, given the lack of attacking quality on display.

Cardiff City vs Sunderland Team News

Cardiff City have made a few key signings this summer, players who will be key to their success this season. Calum Chambers has been brought in on a free transfer to help secure up the defence, whilst Anwar El Ghazi has arrived from Mainz to provide some new attacking flair to the Bluebird’s attacking options.

Wilfred Kanga has also made the move to the Cardiff City Stadium after completing a 500k loan move from Hertha Berlin. Some key players have also left Cardiff this Summer, most notably Ebou Adams has signed for Derby County for £1.07 million following a loan spell there last season.

We expect Erol Bulut to name a new look side for this game, with Chambers, EL Ghazi and Kanga all making their way into the starting XI, whilst veterans such as Joe Ralls and David Turnbull are likely to feature in the midfield.

Régis Le Bris is yet to make any big moves in the transfer window, with Sunderland yet to spend or raise any money from the market. The Black Cats have managed to acquire some free transfers such as Ian Poveda from Leeds United and Alan Browne from Preston North End.

As a result of Sunderland’s lack of spending in the transfer market, they are likely to name a similar side to the one that lost on the final day of last season. Luke O’Nein will remain as captain, whilst Jobe Bellingham is likely to retain his place in the centre of midfield.

Cardiff vs Sunderland - Recent Form

A mixed campaign last time round left Cardiff City finishing in 12th place in the Championship table, having picked up 62 points from their 46 league outings. The Bluebirds struggled in the closing of the season, losing three of their last four league matches.

Although pre-season can often be misleading, the respective pre-season’s of both of these sides may be a good indicator as to their performance on the opening day of the campaign.

Cardiff have had a respectable pre-season, having recorded four wins, two draws and just one defeat from their seven friendly games. Notably, Cardiff recorded a 3-0 victory over Hamburger SV and a 1-1 draw against Hertha Berlin.

Following a disappointing resolution to their campaign, Sunderland finished the 2023/2024 Championship in 16th position, having gained 56 points from their 46 league games.

The Black Cats ended their league campaign with a disappointing run of three consecutive defeats. The defeats against Sheffield Wednesday, Watford, and Millwall, where they failed to find the net in any of those matches.

Sunderland’s Pre-season has not been as successful as Cardiff’s, however they have managed to get some much needed minutes under the belts of their players. The Black Cats have played six friendly games, winning two, losing two and drawing one.

While recent form can offer some clues about a team's potential, it's essential to approach it with caution when predicting season openers. The intensity and pressure of league matches are often different from pre-season friendlies, making it difficult to gauge true form. As such, the opening game of a season is often a roll of the dice, with unpredictable outcomes becoming the norm rather than the exception.
