Leeds vs Burnley: Preview & Prediction

Leeds United host Burnley at Elland Road in a fixture between two of the league’s promotion favourites.

          Date: 14/09/24

          Kick-off time: 12:30

          Venue: Elland Road

It was a stuttering start to the campaign for Leeds, but they have got back on track in recent games with two wins in a row. After drawing their opening two games and suffering elimination in the first round of the EFL Cup, things are looking up for the hosts. They are in fourth place and will be in the hunt for automatic promotion following their playoff final defeat last season.

Manager Daniel Farke has seen several high-profile names depart from the club over the summer, including Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Sinisterra, which could have contributed to their slow start. However, they have scored seven goals in their first four games, with the likes of Brenden Aaronson, Mateo Joseph, Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James all finding the back of the net.

Burnley have endured a similar start to the season, though in reverse. They started excellently with two wins, a 4-1 victory at Luton before beating Cardiff 5-0 at home. A defeat to Sunderland began a winless streak of three, including a loss to Wolves in the EFL Cup. They risk stretching this run to four games with a tricky trip to Leeds on the horizon.

The Clarets are under new management, with Scott Parker taking over from Vincent Kompany. After scoring nine goals in their first two, Parker will be hoping that his side’s recent form is nothing but a blip. Two of the team’s top scorers from last season, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Zeki Amdouni, are no longer at the club with more responsibility falling on the shoulders of Lyle Foster. The striker has scored once so far in his last appearance against Blackburn.

Since 2020, these two teams have met four times, all in the Premier League. It is a fixture that has been dominated by Leeds in recent seasons, with three wins and a draw. The last time they faced off was in January 2022, when Leeds won 3-1 at Elland Road. Jack Harrison, Stuart Dallas and Daniel James scored the goals. They also beat Burnley 4-0 away from home the season prior. The Clarets’ last win against their opponents was in 2016 when they played in the Championship. They were narrow 1-0 winners.

          Team News

          Leeds

New signing Manor Soloman could debut after arriving late in the window. However, expect Mateo Joseph to retain his spot up front. Willy Gnonto was substituted at half-time during the international break following a heavy challenge, so his fitness is one to monitor.

          Burnley

Mike Tresor has been out with a leg injury, with his return date not yet determined. Nathan Redmond will also miss out and is expected to be sidelined until October with a knee issue.

          Form Guide

          Leeds:

In their last five games, Leeds have won two, drawn two and lost one. After a tricky start to the campaign, Leeds have found their feet in recent games. The last was a home fixture against Hull, in which they were 2-0 winners. Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe scored second-half goals to secure the three points.

This followed a result of the same scoreline, this time away at Sheffield Wednesday. Brenden Aaronson put them ahead midway through the first half before Daniel James doubled the lead shortly after the restart.

That victory snapped a three-game winless streak, the latest being a goalless draw at West Brom. Leeds were knocked out of the EFL Cup at the first hurdle, losing 3-0 at home to Middlesbrough. All goals were scored in the second half. The first game of the season saw them draw 3-3 with Portsmouth. The hosts took the lead through Pascal Struijk from the spot, before Portsmouth turned it around before the break. Wilfried Gnonto equalised, and then both teams scored in stoppage time to share the points.

          Burnley:

In their last five games, Burnley have won two, lost two and drawn one. The Clarets made an excellent start to the season with two wins from two, but have stumbled since. They started their campaign with an impressive 4-1 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Luton Town. They took an early lead through Josh Brownhill before Wilson Odobert added a second before the break. The hosts pulled one back, but further strikes from Dara O’Shea and Vitinho secured the three points.

They followed this with an even more dominant result against Cardiff, winning 5-0 at home. An own goal put them in front, with a Luca Koleosho finish doubling the lead before half-time. Brownhill, Zeki Amdouni and Johann Berg Gudmundsson completed the scoring.

Next was a tricky trip to Sunderland. It resulted in their first defeat of the season, as they were beaten 1-0. Romaine Mundle scored the winner midway through the first half. Attention shifted to the EFL Cup as they were knocked out by Wolves in a 2-0 loss. Last time out, they were held to a 1-1 draw with rivals Blackburn. Lyle Foster put them ahead, but they were pegged back by Andreas Weimann. Makhtar Gueye saw red for the visitors, but Burnley could not take advantage.
