          Plymouth vs Hull Prediction

Both teams will be looking to pick up their first win of the campaign, though we expect the wait to continue with nothing to split the pair in this one.

Hull have the historical advantage in this fixture with two wins in the previous four meetings. Last season, this game ended in a 1-1 draw at the MKM Stadium, whilst Plymouth won the home fixture. However, Hull are winless in their last eight games, and have been very vulnerable at the back, failing to keep a clean sheet in their last nine.

Only two teams drew more times than Hull’s 13 in the league last season, and Plymouth were involved in 12 draws. The visitors drew 1-1 in their first game, and we are backing them to pick up another point in this one with the same scoreline – Plymouth Argyle 1-1 Hull City

Plymouth vs Hull: Preview & Prediction

Hull City travel to Plymouth Argyle in the second game of the Championship season, with both sides looking to pick up a first win following opening day setbacks.

          Date: 17/08/24

          Kick-off time: 15:00

          Venue: Home Park

Plymouth narrowly avoided relegation last season by one point, and it was a victory against this weekend’s opponents which secured their safety. They have come into this season under new management, as Wayne Rooney is now at the helm looking to keep the club in the division for a third consecutive season.

It was not a good start for the Englishman, however, as Argyle fell to a 4-0 defeat in their first game at Sheffield Wednesday. It was a tricky test for their first game, and they failed to provide a threat, managing just one shot on target with from five attempts.

They will be facing a Hull City side who were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City in their first game. The Tigers are hoping to build on a very strong season last year which saw them finish in seventh, just three points outside the playoff places. They will be looking to make a return to the top flight for the first time since 2017, a period of time which also included a one-year stint in League One. It is a goal they will aim to achieve under new manager Tim Walter, who took over from Liam Rosenior.

As expected with their low league position, Plymouth’s defence was amongst the worst in the Championship as they conceded 70 goals. Only two other sides allowed more. They offered a much stronger showing in pre-season, conceding five in five games and keeping two clean sheets. Unable to continue this form into their first game, they will hope to get back on track at home.

Going forward, they will fancy their chances against a Hull backline who conceded at least two goals in each of their last five pre-season games. Morgan Whittaker enjoyed an excellent season, and was his side’s top scorer with 19 goals. He will once again be the club’s biggest threat in attack. At the other end, Hull will look to the likes of Oscar Estupinan to replace the hole left behind by Jaden Philogene and Fabio Carvalho, who are both no longer at the club. Estupinan scored the equalising goal last week from the penalty spot.

Fixtures have been rare between these two sides with just four meetings taking place since 2008. The first of these was not until 2020 when the pair were both in League One. Hull just edged these four games with two wins to one, though last season in the Championship they were unable to pick up three points in either fixture. At home they were held to a 1-1 draw, whilst they lost 1-0 on the road. Joe Edwards scored a 40th minute winner on this day. Historically, they have been much more frequent opponents, playing against each other 78 times in total. Hull have won 34, and Plymouth have been victorious on 24 occasions.

          Where to Watch

          Team News

          Plymouth Argyle

Plymouth came through the first game with no injury concerns, but after such a disappointing defeat and performance in their opener, do not be surprised to see manager Wayne Rooney tinker with his lineup for this one. Callum Wright and Ryan Hardie came on as second half substitutes, and they could be in line for bigger roles this weekend.

          Hull City

Expect Hull to name a similar lineup to that which started last week against Bristol City with no new injury concerns to contend with. Goalscorer Oscar Estupinan should continue to lead the attack.

          Form Guide

          Plymouth Argyle:

In their last five games, Plymouth have won three and lost two. It was a very solid pre-season for Argyle as they prepared for the start of the new season. However, they were unable to continue this momentum into their opener as they faced a tricky trip to Sheffield Wednesday. They were on the end of a heavy defeat, losing 4-0.

This followed three wins and a loss in friendlies. The first in this run was a dominant 5-1 victory away at Cheltenham. They fell behind in this one, but recovered with goals from Ibrahim Cissoko, Morgan Whittaker, Muhamed Tijani (x2) and Ryan Hardie to record the resounding win. Another win against Torquay was next, with Hardie on the scoresheet once more from the spot, before Bali Mumba added the second.

Bristol Rovers inflicted their only defeat with a 2-1 result, but they responded well to win 1-0 against MK Dons in their final friendly. Hardie’s 68th minute winner capped a fine pre-season for the forward.

          Hull City:

In their last five games, Hull have drawn two and lost three. It was a poor pre-season for Hull, as they failed to pick up any wins. Their inconsistencies continued in their opening game of the season as they drew 1-1 with Bristol City at home. They started the game strongly, but could not break the deadlock. The visitors thought they had won it late through Fally Mayulu, but Oscar Estupinan snatched a point at the death from the penalty spot.

This came following a 2-0 defeat to Reading in their final friendly game, continuing a winless streak for the Tigers. They had faced superior opposition in their two games prior, first losing 2-0 against Premier League side Newcastle and then picking up a draw with Italians Fiorentina. Hull managed to erase a two-goal deficit with goals from Abdus Omur and Pietro Terracciano.

The first game of this run ended in disappointing fashion, as they fell to a 4-0 loss to League Two side Doncaster.
