Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Prediction

This Yorkshire Derby between Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds promises to be a close encounter between the two teams based on recent results involving the two teams. Leeds are unbeaten in their last three away at Sheffield Wednesday, with the home side last winning the fixture at Hillsborough in 2017.

In this fixture, there have been less than 2.5 goals in each of the previous six meetings. Leeds United have kept a clean sheet in three of their last six against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough. Neither team has done a league double over the other since the 17/18 season, where Sheffield Wednesday beat Leeds 2-1 at Elland Road and 3-1 at home.

We are leaning towards Leeds United picking up their first league win of the season in what looks like a cagey affair. We predict Sheffield Wednesday 0-1 Leeds United as the final scoreline.

Sheff Wed vs Leeds Preview & Prediction

The Championship is underway as we enter matchday three, and this round of fixtures promises to entertain fans with mouthwatering encounters. A Yorkshire Derby is offered Friday night as Sheffield Wednesday hosts Leeds United at Hillsborough.

            Date: 23/08/2024

            Hillsborough

            Kick-Off: 8.00 pm

Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United will seek different aspirations this season based on their League performances in the previous campaign. Sheffield Wednesday’s revitalisation last season was spearheaded by young German manager Danny Rohl. Rohl was appointed the previous season, and many speculated whether the unproven manager had the necessary skills to drag Sheffield Wednesday away from the depths of a near-certain relegation. Rohl exceeded expectations in guiding the Owls to safety and will now set his sights on assuring the home side’s survival in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday began their campaign in terrific style by beating fellow strugglers from last season, Plymouth Argyle, 4-0, in a game that promised so much for the Owls. However, Danny Rohl’s side was brought back down to earth with a familiar feeling as they succumbed to a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Sunderland.

As for the visitors, based on the last campaign, Leeds United are the bookmakers’ favourites to win the Championship title this season. Leeds United suffered poor form towards the end of last season, which ultimately scuppered their chances of promotion via the automatic route. Leeds then suffered the ignominy of losing out in the play-off final to Southampton, which disappointed the fanbase at Elland Road.

Leeds United began their second season in the Championship with an enthralling six-goal-thriller at Elland Road when they drew 3-3 with Portsmouth, newly promoted. Daniel Farke’s side opened the scoring in the 10th minute through a penalty from Pascal Struijk. What was expected to be a routine victory was anything but for Leeds as goals from Elias Sorenson and Callum Lang gave Pompey a half-time lead. Wilfred Gnonto equalised for Leeds before Callum Lang scored in the 92nd minute to seemingly hand the victory to Portsmouth. Brenden Aaronsen scored in the 95th minute to rescue a point for Leeds United.

The Lilywhites were then held to a 0-0 draw away at the Hawthorns as they faced a determined West Bromwich Albion side who won their opening fixture 3-0. Leeds United will have to reshuffle their options this season, losing the likes of Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.

            Recent Form

Sheffield Wednesday have no losses in their previous three games and are unbeaten at home so far this season, granted they have only played one game at Hillsborough. Last season, the Owls’ record at Hillsborough substantially contributed to their survival campaign the previous time round. Sheffield Wednesday recorded a 33% win record at home by winning eight, drawing seven and losing the other eight remaining games.

Danny Rohl’s side were proficient in front of goal last season, recording an average of 1.14 goals scored per game whilst conceding roughly the same amount. The 4-0 win on the opening day had given Danny Rohl’s side the perfect start, although the 4-0 defeat against Sunderland brings the goal difference for Sheffield Wednesday back down to zero.

Leeds United are unbeaten in their last three away at Sheffield Wednesday, with the home side last winning the fixture at Hillsborough in 2017. Daniel Farke’s side last season was unbelievable, with a 90-point finish, although it wasn’t enough to gain promotion ahead of Ipswich Town. Despite missing out on promotion, Leeds United recorded a 68% win rate at Elland Road and a 46% win rate away from home.
