Freiburg vs West Ham Match Prediction & Betting Tips

Freiburg hosts West Ham at the Europa-Park Stadion in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16. Both sides have had mixed form in their domestic leagues and look to turn their fortunes around in Europe.

            Date: 07/03/2024

            Kick-off time: 20:00

            Location: Europa-Park Stadion

West Ham and Freiburg were both in Group A, but with The Hammers finishing top, they advanced straight into the Round of 16. Freiburg finished second and had to compete in the Round of 32 against Lens.

Freiburg currently sit ninth in the Bundesliga. In 24 games, Freiburg have eight wins, six draws and ten losses which leaves them on 30 points, seven points from European football.

The German side have only competed in the Europa League twice before this season. In 2013, Freiburg exited at the Group Stage where they competed against the likes of Slovan Liberec, Estoril Praia and Sevilla. Last season Freiburg crashed out at this stage, losing 3 - 0 on aggregate to Juventus.

West Ham currently sit seventh in the Premier League. In 27 games, The Hammers have 12 wins, six draws and nine losses, leaving them on 42 points, eight points from Europe.

This is only West Ham’s second season in the Europa League, but the last time out in 2022, The Hammers made it to the Semi-finals. However, West Ham lost 3 - 1 on aggregate to Eintracht Frankfurt, the eventual winners. Also, last season, West Ham won the Europa Conference League against Fiorentina.

Freiburg and West Ham have only played each other twice, both of these meetings coming in this season’s Group Stage. The Hammers have the better record in the fixture, winning both of the games.

Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez both scored in the first half to give West Ham the 2 - 0 win at home. The return fixture saw Freiburg on the scoresheet through Roland Sallai, but goals from Lucas Paqueta and Sergio Aguerd gave West Ham the 2 - 1 win.

            Recent Form

In their last five games in all competitions, Freiburg have one win, three draws and one loss.

In the first leg of the Europa League Round of 32, Freiburg travelled to France to take on Lens. Freiburg had four shots on target in comparison to Lens’ zero shots on target despite having less possession. However, Freiburg couldn’t convert any of them as the game finished in a 0 - 0 draw.

Back in the Bundesliga, Freiburg hosted Frankfurt. Omar Marmoush and Ansgar Knauff were on the scoresheet for Frankfurt in the first half, but a goal from Ritsu Doan and a penalty from Vincenzo Grifo made it 2 - 2 at halftime. Knauff scored again to give Frankfurt the 3 - 2 lead late on but a goal from Michael Gregoritsch in the 89th minute gave Freiburg the 3 - 3 draw.

The second leg saw Lens in Germany. David Costa and Elye Wahi gave Lens the 2 - 0 lead at halftime. However, a brace from Sallai sent the tie to extra time after the 0 - 0 draw in the first leg. Gregoritsch scored in the 99th minute to give Freiburg the 3 - 2 win and the spot in the next round.

Despite the early penalty from Grifo, Felix Udokhai and Arne Engels both scored late in the second half to give Augsburg the 2 - 1 win over Freiburg.

The last time out for Freiburg was a game against Bayern Munich. Christian Gunter’s early goal gave Freiburg the early lead but Mathys Tel equalised for Bayern before halftime. Jamal Musiala put Bayern ahead but a goal from Lucas Holer in the 87th minute grabbed a 2 - 2 draw for Freiburg.

In their last five games in all competitions, West Ham have two wins and three losses.

Despite having ten more shots than Manchester United, a goal from Rasmus Hojlund and a brace from Alejandro Garnacho gave United the 3 - 0 win over West Ham.

The next time out for West Ham was an even bigger loss against Arsenal. William Saliba opened the scoring for Arsenal and a penalty from Bukayo Saka along with goals from Gabriel Magalhaes and Leandro Trossard gave Arsenal a 4 - 0 lead into halftime. Saka grabbed another goal and was joined on the scoresheet by Declan Rice in the 6 - 0 win for Arsenal.

Another loss came against Nottingham Forest. Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi both scored for Forest to give them the 2 - 0 win over ten-man West Ham, who had Kalvin Phillips sent off in the second half.

West Ham bounced back against Brentford. Jarrod Bowen scored twice early on, but Neal Maupay scored to get The Bees on the scoresheet before halftime. Bowen completed his hat-trick and Emerson Palmieri also scored in the 4 - 2 win for The Hammers, Yoane Wissa scoring late for Brentford.

The most recent outing for West Ham was against Everton. Beto opened the scoring for The Toffees but a goal from Kurt Zouma levelled the game with 30 minutes to go. Tomas Soucek and Alvarez both scored in extra time to grab a 3 - 1 win for West Ham.
