Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz Prediction

This game is a fascinating one, as Borussia Dortmund’s league position doesn’t represent the quality that they have on paper, while Mainz are having the season of their lives.

The Black and Yellows are 11th in the Bundesliga with 35 points from 26 matches, while Mainz sit in the Champions League qualification places with 45 points from the same number of games.

On top of this, Dortmund’s home form is the fifth-best in the Bundesliga, however, they have only won seven of their 13 games at the Signal Iduna Park, while Mainz’s away record is the third-best in the division as they have accumulated 23 points from 13 matches.

As far as head-to-head records go, Mainz are actually unbeaten in their last four meetings with Dortmund, having won two and drawn two. Due to the attacking nature of these two sides, we believe that the game will finish as a score draw.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Mainz

Borussia Dortmund vs Mainz Prediction & Preview

Borussia Dortmund hosts Mainz at the Signal Iduna Park in what is a battle between 11th and third in the Bundesliga.

Date: 30/03/2025

Location: Signal Iduna Park

Time: 4:30pm

When these two sides last met back on 9th November, the match resulted in a 3-1 win for Mainz as they capitalised on Emre Can’s 27th-minute red card by scoring three goals through the likes of Lee Jae-sung, Jonathan Burkardt and Paul Nebel, while Serhou Guirassy’s 40th-minute penalty turned out to be a mere consolation goal.

It has been a tough league campaign for Dortmund thus far, as they sit 11th in the table with 35 points from 26 games, resulting in the sacking of Nuri Sahin on 22nd January, as the 36-year-old oversaw just 12 wins from 27 matches in charge of his former club.

Ex-Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovač has failed to improve the situation, though, as the former Croatia international has won just four of his first ten games at the helm.

The one shining light in Dortmund’s season is that they still remain in the Champions League as they defeated Lille 3-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16, however, they will face the unenviable task of taking on Barcelona in the quarter-finals of this season’s competition.

On the other hand, Mainz are third in the standings with 45 points from 26 matches, seeing them be the surprise package of the Bundesliga season, as only Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich sit ahead of them in the table.

Mainz will be desperate to qualify for European football, however, there are a lot of teams that are hot on their tail, as the likes of Borussia Mönchengladbach in seventh-place sit just five points behind them. Their sole focus is on the Bundesliga, having been knocked out of the DFB Pokal by Bayern Munich via a 4-0 scoreline in the Second Round.

Form Guide

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund’s form has been inconsistent, as they have won just two of their last five matches.

Niko Kovač’s side have earned wins over St. Pauli (2-0) and Lille (3-2 on aggregate) while in their other games, they suffered a shock home loss to Augsburg (1-0), as well as losing 2-0 away at RB Leipzig as Xavi Simons and Loïs Openda both got on the scoresheet that day.

Mainz

Mainz salvaged a 2-2 home draw with Freiburg last time out after being reduced to ten men following Kohr’s dismissal after 43-minutes. Mainz’s goals came from Jonathan Burkardt and Andreas Hanche-Olsen that day.

Prior to that game, Mainz also earned victories against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-1), RB Leipzig (2-1), St. Pauli (2-0) and Heidenheim (2-0).
