Borussia Dortmund vs Sporting Lisbon Prediction

Borussia Dortmund enter this tie as firm favourites to progress following their 3-0 win in Lisbon last week, however, in terms of a one-off game, perhaps this could lead to a victory for the away side due to the fact that there will be less emphasis on the hosts to go for the game itself.

The Black and Yellows have actually been in poor league form under Niko Kovač, having suffered dismal defeats at home to Stuttgart and away to bottom of the table VFL Bochum last time out, while Sporting have struggled since Ruben Amorim’s departure, winning five of their 11 Liga NOS matches.

Prediction: Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Sporting Lisbon

Borussia Dortmund Prediction & Preview

Borussia Dortmund will be looking to confirm their place in the Champions League’s Round of 16 when they face Sporting Lisbon in the second leg of their Round of 32 clash at Signal Iduna Park.

Date: 19/02/2025

Location: Signal Iduna Park

Time: 5:45pm

The first leg saw Dortmund beat Sporting Lisbon 3-0 at José Alvalade Stadium thanks to three goals in the last 30 minutes of the game by Serhou Guirassy, Pascal Gross and Karim Adeyemi, seeing last season’s Champions League finalists in firm control of the tie.

This was a vital win for Dortmund, who are having a dismal 2024/25 season, as they sit 11th in the Bundesliga with just 29 points from 22 matches, eight points adrift of RB Leipzig in fourth-place and 15 points clear of 16th-place Heidenheim. Niko Kovač will be desperate to see a positive up-turn in form, having replaced caretaker manager Mike Tullberg after the sacking of Nuri Şahin.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund have only accumulated four points from their last seven matches. On top of this, they exited the DFB Pokal in the Second Round to Wolfsburg (1-0) after a 4-1 victory at Phonix Lübeck in the First Round.

The UEFA Champions League has provided some escapism for Dortmund as a club, as they finished 10th in the Group Stage with 15 points to their name following victories over Club Brugge (3-0), Celtic (7-1), Sturm Graz (1-0), Dinamo Zagreb (3-0) and Shakhtar Donetsk (3-1) while losing to Real Madrid (5-2), Barcelona (3-2) and Bologna (2-1).

On the other hand, Sporting Lisbon are clinging on to their place at the top of Liga NOS, having won just four of their last 11 games in the post-Amorim era, as they’re just two points ahead of second-place Benfica on 52 points after 22 matches.

In the Taca da Liga, Sporting suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Benfica in the final after a 1-1 draw, while in the Taca de Portugal, they’ll face Gil Vicente in the quarter-finals after scraping past Santa Clara 2-1 after extra time.

Sporting’s Champions League campaign has been shaky to say the least since Amorim’s exit to Manchester United, as they accumulated 10 points from their first four matches under the current Red Devils boss, having drawn 1-1 with PSV while beating Lille (2-0), Sturm Graz (2-0) and Manchester City (4-1). Since then, the Portuguese outfit have suffered defeats to Arsenal (5-1), Club Brugge (2-1), RB Leipzig (2-1) while drawing 1-1 at home with Bologna.

Borussia Dortmund enter this game with two defeats from their last three matches under Niko Kovac following wins over Shakhtar Donetsk (3-1) and Heidenheim (2-1) in their final two matches of Mike Tullberg’s caretaker reign.

The Black and Yellow recently suffered dismal 2-1 and 2-0 defeats to Stuttgart and VFL Bochum on either side of their 3-0 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Sporting Lisbon
