PSG vs Manchester City Prediction

This game will be extremely tough to call with PSG unbeaten in ten matches in all competitions and Manchester City discovering form with no losses in six. Both sides will know this fixture will have significant importance, with only one point separating the two teams, and both looking to finish inside the top 24 places in this competition.

PSG are without a clean sheet in their last three matches and have only won once from three home matches in this competition, failing to win in their previous two. Manchester City are unbeaten in their previous three matches away from home in all competitions and will likely carry that momentum against PSG for this game – PSG 1-2 Manchester City

PSG vs Manchester City: Preview & Prediction

PSG host Manchester City in Europe, with both sides desperate for a win with their Champions League prospects in the balance.

Date: 22/01/25

Kick-off time: 20:00

Venue: Parc des Princes

A terrible period for Manchester City had seen them fall in both the Premier League and Champions League, but they are now unbeaten in six games and come into this one with momentum. It is a crucial fixture with City sitting just inside the playoff places only one point clear of dropping out completely. They have struggled in the competition with just two wins from six, with two draws and two losses. This includes a three-game winless stretch.

It is a similar story for PSG, who are looking for three points to get them into the playoff spots. They are in 25th position, just one point behind their upcoming opponents. If there is a loser in this game, it will put them in a very precarious position heading into the final game of the group phase. The unthinkable of either Man City or PSG not even advancing to the playoff stage may become a reality.

There will be plenty of attacking talent on display, with goals likely on both sides. Despite playing against lesser opposition than they will face this week, City have scored at least twice in each of their last five games, with 22 goals overall. Erling Haaland scored last time out, taking his own total to 22 on the season in all competitions. Phil Foden has also played himself into form, scoring five in his last three league appearances. This gives City a goal threat from midfield which they have been sorely missing in recent weeks.

Although they have faced issues in the Champions League, PSG have been in good form domestically. They have won seven of their last eight games in 90 minutes, and were victorious in Matchday Six of the competition away at RB Salzburg. A lack of goals have been a problem in Europe, however, with just six goals. No player has scored more than once. Bradley Barcola is their top scorer in Ligue 1 with 11, closely followed by Ousmane Dembele with 10.

This will be just the seventh ever meeting between these two sides. Manchester City have a very favourable record in this fixture, winning four and losing just once. They met in the semi-final of the competition in 2021, which City won 4-1 on aggregate to advance to the final which they lost to Chelsea. Their latest meeting came later that year in the following season’s group stages. Each side won their home game, including a 2-0 victory for PSG. Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi were the goalscorers.

Team News

PSG

PSG signed winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia last week but this game may come too soon for his debut. Marquinhos and Ibrahim Mbaye are expected to miss out through injury, with a return date possible by the end of this month.

Manchester City

Man City could receive a big boost with the return of John Stones, but will still be without Nathan Ake. Rodri and Oscar Bobb are the only other absentees with the rest of the squad available for selection.

Form Guide

PSG:

In their last five games, PSG have won four and drawn one. It has been a strong stretch for PSG as they have competed across three competitions. This run started a penalty shootout win at Lens in the French Cup following a 1-1 draw.

The Trophée des Champions final was next, which they won 1-0 against Monaco. The victory came in dramatic fashion as Ousmane Dembele netted a 92nd minute winner. A return to league action followed, where they beat St-Etienne 2-1 at home. A first-half brace from Dembele, the first from the penalty spot, gave them a comfortable lead at half-time. The visitors halved the deficit, but PSG were able to hold on.

They advanced to the last 16 of the French Cup with a 4-2 win away at lower league Espaly. They fell behind to a shock opener, but goals from Warren Zaire-Emery and Desire Doue turned it around. The home side equalised, though late goals from Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos prevented an upset. Last time out they travelled to Lens, where they came from behind to win 2-1. Second half goals from Fabian Ruiz and Barcola put them ahead.

Man City:

In their last five games, Man City have won four and drawn one. It has been a much better stretch for City as of late following a long winless period. This run started with a 2-0 victory at Leicester. Savinho and Erling Haaland scored either side of half-time.

They made it two wins in a row with a convincing 4-1 win at home to West Ham. An own goal put City ahead, before a Haaland brace and Phil Foden strike put the game to bed early in the second half. Niclas Fullkrug scored a consolation with 20 minutes to go. Attention shifted to the FA Cup third round where City hosted Salford. The gulf in quality proved far too big as the home side were 8-0 winners. Jeremy Doku (x2), Divin Mubama, Nico O’Reilly, Jack Grealish and James McAtee (x3) were all on the scoresheet.

Last Tuesday, City blew a lead late on to draw 2-2 at Brentford. They took a 2-0 lead through Foden, but two goals in the final 10 minutes, including the leveller in stoppage time, meant the points were shared. At the weekend they visited Ipswich. They won 6-0 with goals from Foden (x2), Mateo Kovacic, Doku, Haaland and McAtee.
