Sunderland vs Hull City Prediction

Sunderland enter their home clash with Hull City as firm favourites due to the overall quality of their squad and the fact that they are 17 places above and 32 points better off than the Tigers.

Hull have won just two of their last 13 matches against the Black Cats, while the reverse fixture itself resulted in a narrow 1-0 win for Sunderland back in October.

Régis Le Bris’ side have the third-best home record in the Championship, having earned 36 points from 16 matches, winning ten and drawing six, while scoring 28 times and conceding just 12. Since these two sides drew 4-4 back in April 2023, each head-to-head clash has finished 1-0 to either side - we’re predicting another closely-fought contest here.

Prediction: Sunderland 2-0 Hull City

Sunderland vs Hull City Prediction & Preview

Fourth-place Sunderland hosts 21st-place Hull City at the Stadium of Light in what is one of three early Championship kick-offs on Saturday.

Date: 22/02/2025

Location: Stadium of Light

Time: 12:30pm

As previously mentioned, Sunderland managed to beat Hull City 1-0 at the MKM Stadium back in October as talismanic figure Wilson Isidor scored the only goal of the game.

The 24-year-old Frenchman has since signed on a permanent basis from Zenit St. Petersburg and is having a fantastic season, having found the back of the net 12 times in 30 Championship appearances, while creating one assist, seeing Isidor sit as the third top scorer in the division, only behind the likes of Joel Piroe and Borja Sainz.

Sunderland are having a much-improved campaign, as they are fourth in the standings with 62 points from 33 matches (17 wins, 11 draws and five defeats). Le Bris’ men are currently eight points adrift of the automatic promotion places, but, are 15 points ahead of seventh-place Coventry City, meaning that they are almost guaranteed a place in the play-offs barring a drastic collapse.

This is a major improvement on last season’s underperformance while the likes of Tony Mowbray, Michael Beale and Mike Dodds were in charge, as they finished 16th-place in 2023/24, with just 56 points to their name.

On the other hand, Hull City have had a major regression from last campaign, as the Tigers missed out on the play-offs with 70 points from 46 matches, consequently seeing Liam Rosenior lose his job, while the squad also saw departures of several key players such as Ozan Tufan, Fabio Carvalho, Jade Philogene and more.

Hull are in a potentially perilous position, as they are in the midst of a relegation dog fight under Ruben Selles. The ex-Southampton and Reading manager was appointed back on 9th December, taking over from Tim Walter who had a disastrous spell with the Tigers, winning just three of his 18 matches at the helm.

Since the Spaniard took over, Selles has seen his side pick-up 15 points from 13 matches, resulting in Hull sitting 21st-place with 30 points from 32 matches, just three points above bottom of the table Luton Town.

Something which epitomises Hull’s woes is their lack of goals, as they are the third-lowest scorers in the division with 32 goals from 32 games. Joao Pedro is currently their top scorer with five goals from 24 games, while their second top scorer has found the back of the net just three times in 21 appearances (Christian Bile Bedia).

Form Guide

Sunderland

Sunderland suffered late heartbreak against Leeds United at Elland Road on Monday night, as Dutch defender Pascal Struijk scored a late brace after Isidor had given the Black Cats the lead in the 32nd-minute.

Prior to that game, Le Bris’ men had earned vital wins over Luton Town (2-0) and Middlesbrough (3-2) while drawing with both Watford and Plymouth Argyle via 2-2 scorelines.

Hull City

Hull enter this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with Norwich, a game which saw them take the lead in the 14th-minute of the game through Matt Crooks before Josh Sargent fired in a 47th-minute equaliser for the Canaries.

In the previous four matches, the Tigers had suffered defeats to Burnley (2-0), Stoke City (2-1) and QPR (2–1), while managing a stunning 3-0 victory at Sheffield United thanks to goals from Crooks, Matty Jacob and Harrison Burrows (own goal).
