Watford vs Plymouth Argyle Prediction, Tips & Stats

Plymouth Argyle head on the road for the first time in the Championship for over a decade with a meeting at Vicarage Road against Watford as the Pilgrims aim to make it three wins in a row in the 2023/24 season.

It's been a magnificent start to the new campaign for the League One winners as they ran out comfortable winners in the end against Huddersfield Town on matchday one. Morgan Whittaker and Ryan Hardie carried on their excellent form from last season with a goal each that day, as Bali Mumba also scored for the club in the second half.

Argyle played host to Leyton Orient on Tuesday for the first round of EFL Cup games, as Ben Waine scored twice in the first half to put the League One outfit to the sword. It means a faultless start to the new season for Plymouth, but this will be an almighty test against a rejuvenated Watford.

The Hornets smashed Queens Park Rangers at Vicarage Road on the first game, as Tom Dele-Bashiru, Imran Louza, Matheus Martins and Vakoun Issouf Bayo all scored a goal in the first half of a 4-0 battering.

However, Watford did lose on penalties to League One side Stevenage away from home during the week, as Vakoun Issouf Bayo scored early on once again before an equaliser 30 minutes later from Stevenage.

Nevertheless, Watford were by far the team of the week in the Championship on gameday one and are expected to give Plymouth a serious go for their money this weekend.

            Watford team news

Thankfully for Watford, their horrific luck with injuries has cured itself a bit more over the summer and many names have now returned. This did, however, force the retirement of Tom Cleverley, and the midfield of Imran Louza and Tom Dele-Bashiru should remain - both scored in the first 20 minutes against QPR. Sierralta could also start alongside them, but Jake Livermore may now get a starting role after doing so in midweek. Giorgi Chakvetadze and Ismael Kone are expected in the starting XI too. Daniel Bachmann remains the number one for Watford still, and he will play behind Ngakia, Porteous, Hoedt and Morris.

            Plymouth Argyle team news

Plymouth have secured two wins from their first two games of the season already but they will make some changes to the won that won in the midweek EFL Cup clash. Ben Waine and Tyreik Wright should start htis one, while Matt Butcher and Finn Isaac Azaz are likely to come back in too. Morgan Whittaker, Ryan Hardie and Bali Mumba all scored a goal as a front three in the win over Huddersfield, so there are likely to be no changes here. Scarr, Gibson, Edwards and Kesler-Hayden should all remain while new goalkeeper Hazard starts between the sticks.
