Hoffenheim vs Tottenham Prediction

Things are not looking great for Ange Postecoglu and a difficult trip for Tottenham awaits as they face Hoffenheim. The home side are unbeaten at home in this competition, following two draws and a 2-0 win against Dynamo Kyiv. In all competitions, the hosts have only won once in their previous five in all competitions, with their impressive 4-3 win against RB Leipzig.

Hoffenheim are without a clean sheet in their previous six matches, with Over 2.5 goals landing in four of their last five. Tottenham are one place behind the top eight automatic places in this competition and are winless in their last two away matches in the Europa League against Galatasaray (3-2) and Rangers (1-1). Spurs have lost three of their previous five matches away from home in all competitions, so more than likely a draw in on the cards here – Hoffenheim 2-2 Tottenham

Hoffenheim vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

Tottenham travel to Germany to face Hoffenheim in the Europa League, looking for three points to take them into the top eight.

Date: 23/01/25

Kick-off time: 17:45

Venue: Rhein-Neckar Arena

The Europa League provides a much needed distraction for Tottenham, who have endured a dreadful stretch in the Premier League. Spurs are in 15th place and are winless in their last six games. Their only victories since mid-December have come in the cup competitions. They currently occupy ninth spot in the Europa League table, level on points with Rangers, trailing them in goal difference. As it stands, they will have to go through a playoff tie to advance to the knockout stages.

Hoffenheim have also endured a poor campaign, fighting relegation in the Bundesliga and sitting outside of the playoff places in Europe. However, a victory this week could turn their fortunes and drag them into the top 24 of the table. They are just one point adrift of Elfsborg in 24th, but they cannot afford to lose any more ground with just two group games remaining.

There should be goals in this game, particularly with the visitors involved. Tottenham have conceded at least two goals in each of their last four league games, and are suffering from multiple key injuries in their backline. The Germans have struggled for goals this season, but netted three last time out, building momentum ahead of this game. Andrej Kramaric was one of the goalscorers, taking his season tally to seven goals. He has yet to score in Europe this year, but should get opportunities to get off the mark. Adam Hlozek has netted twice in the competition.

As poor as Spurs have been at the back, they are still dangerous going forward. Hoffenheim have not kept a clean sheet in their last five, meaning there is a high chance both teams will get on the scoresheet. Ange Postecoglou will be without Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson, who have been important contributors, which will make their task much tougher. They will have to lean on the likes of James Maddison, Heung-min Son and the recently returned Richarlison to produce attacking returns.

This will be the first ever meeting between these two sides. Tottenham have plenty of experience facing German opposition, however, with 30 matches. They have been far from successful though, with just 13 victories. Hoffenheim’s sample size against English clubs is much smaller, with only four games of experience, two versus both Liverpool and Manchester City. The German side are winless against the pair, so are still searching for their first win against English opponents.

Team News

Hoffenheim

Hoffenheim have a few players out, with none expected to make a return for this game. Ihlas Bebou, Diadie Samassekou and Ozan Kabak are due to return in the middle of February, with Umut Tohumcu further ahead in his recovery. This game comes too soon for Marius Bulter and Christopher Lenz.

Tottenham

Tottenham have several injuries to contend with. They have been dealt a huge blow with both Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson set to miss multiple weeks. Their forward depth has taken a further hit with Timo Werner also out for the upcoming games. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero also remain sidelined.

Form Guide

Hoffenheim:

In their last five games, Hoffenheim have won one, drawn one and lost three. It has been a poor stretch for Hoffenheim as they have struggled for wins. They managed to pick one up in their most recent game, however, as they were 3-1 winners at Holstein Kiel. A brace from Adam Hlozek and further strike from Andrej Kramaric put them in a commanding position before a late consolation.

This followed a crushing 5-0 defeat at leaders Bayern Munich. Goals from Leroy Sane, Raphael Guerreiro and Harry Kane gave the hosts a convincing lead at half-time before they put the game to bed in the second half. A home game against Wolfsburg saw them fall to a narrow 1-0 defeat. Mohamed Amoura scored the only goal of the game after half an hour.

Borussia Monchengladbach were also winners away at Hoffenheim as they beat them 2-1. Philipp Sander and Alassane Plea scored either side of an Kramaric equaliser. The first game of this run was an important point at Borussia Dortmund as they drew 1-1. Jacob Bruun Larsen scored a 91st minute equaliser, cancelling out Giovanni Reyna’s earlier opener.

Tottenham:

In their last five games, Tottenham have won two and lost three. It has been a poor stretch for Spurs, starting with a home game against Newcastle, which they lost 2-1. Dominic Solanke had scored a very early opener, though this was quickly cancelled out by Anthony Gordon. Alexander Isak scored the winning goal before the break.

Attention shifted to Carabao Cup action where they took a big step towards the final, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the semi-final first leg at home. Lucas Bergvall netted the winner in the 86th minute. Tamworth were their next opponents, this time in the FA Cup third round. They won 3-0, through goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Johnson in addition to an own goal. However, this came in extra-time as the non-league side held Spurs to a goalless draw after 90 minutes.

The North London derby saw another defeat in the league as Arsenal beat them 2-1. Heung-min Son gave Spurs the lead, but the Gunners turned it around before half-time. Last time out they travelled to Goodison Park to take on Everton. They lost 3-2, conceding all three before half-time. They threatened a comeback with two late goals from Kuulusevski and Richarlison, but were unable to find the equaliser.
