Peterborough United vs Charlton Athletic Preview & Prediction

Two of the in-form teams in the division meet at the Weston Holmes Stadium at the weekend as Peterborough United take on Charlton Athletic.

Date: 22/03/2025
Location: Weston Holmes Stadium, Peterborough.
Kick-Off: 3 pm

Peterborough United have endured a terrible season, based on many predictions about the East Anglian outfit at the start of the campaign. The Posh were touted to be possibly one the teams that could potentially finish the season inside the top six, after two seasons where Darren Ferguson’s side had reached the play-off semi-finals. Peterborough United had lost out to Oxford United and, most famously, Sheffield Wednesday in the last two seasons but now face a battle to stay in the division. However, their destiny is in their hands.

A significant contributing factor to their disappointing league campaign, which sees the Posh lumbering in 18th place, is the departure of key players, either through sales or injuries. Ronnie Edwards, Josh Knight, Jonson Clarke-Harris and Ephron Mason Clark have all left to find new pastures. Meanwhile, Kwame Poku was ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury, which completely dented Darren Ferguson’s side from December onwards. Peterborough United has the advantage of having a superior goal difference from the teams around, which should keep them in good standing at the end of the season.

As for Charlton Athletic, the Addicks have enjoyed a brilliant season under Nathan Jones since the former Luton Town manager arrived at the club in February 2024. The visitors are now one of the better teams in the division, as the away side are chasing down a top-six place and a potential route back to the Championship for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

Nathan Jones’ side are in fourth place in League One, with 66 points gained from 37 matches - scoring 49 goals and conceding 32. The Addicks could have one eye on the top two places, with the away side only five points adrift of Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham with nine games still to be played.

Form Guide

As mentioned earlier, the two sides were embroiled in a close contest earlier this season, which resulted in a 2-1 win for Charlton Athletic. Matthew Godden (formerly of Peterborough United) opened the scoring for the Addicks with a 54th-minute penalty.

Emmanuel Fernandez (Peterborough United) was sent off for an awful challenge four minutes later until Malik Mothersille restored parity for the Posh with a penalty of his own in the 63rd minute. Peterborough United was denied a priceless draw away from home when Macaulay Gillesphey scored an 89th-minute winner for Charlton Athletic.

Peterborough United are in great form heading into this game, as the Posh are unbeaten in their last seven matches in all competitions - which has also seen the home side reach their second consecutive EFL Trophy Final in which they will face Birmingham City. The Posh have won twice in their previous four league matches, which includes yet another victory against local rivals Cambridge United (0-1) to extend their run of four consecutive victories in the Cambridgeshire Derby.

At the Weston Holmes Stadium, the Posh are in excellent form, with three wins in their previous five matches, including two consecutive league wins against Shrewsbury Town (3-1) and Wigan Athletic (1-0).

Charlton Athletic also come into this game with excellent form across the league, as the Addicks have had no losses in their previous six league games, which has aided their excellent league position. The visitors have won their previous two league matches coming into this game against Wigan Athletic (2-1) and Crawley Town (0-1). Charlton Athletic have won five of their previous six league matches, and their last defeat was against Birmingham City (1-0).

Away from home, the away side are unbeaten in their last three matches, having recorded two victories against Crawley Town (0-1) and Leyton Orient (1-2).
