Wycombe Wanderers are hoping to get their promotion push back on track as they take on Rotherham United this week.
- Date: 18/03/2025
- Kick-off time: 19:45
- Location: New York Stadium, Rotherham
Rotherham United are currently 14th in League One with 45 points from 36 games. The Millers have had a pretty disappointing campaign on the whole, as they entered this game with expectations of mounting a promotion push after being relegated from the Championship last season. However, they've been well short of that level and look destined to finish in mid-table.
Interestingly, Rotherham have kept faith with manager Steve Evans, who is amidst his second spell with the club, which is a rarity in the modern game. With promotion on the line, many clubs would have switched managers a few months back in the hope of salvaging their campaign.
Mathematically, they're not technically clear of relegation yet given they're nine points above the drop zone with ten games left to play. In all likelihood, though, there are much worse sides than them in that bottom half so that's probably not a major concern amongst fans.
Given they're 16 points shy of the playoff places, them making a late run at the playoffs is not realistic, so their season is likely going peter out into nothing from here. They'll have their eyes firmly set on next season in the hope of mounting a promotion push, but for now, they'll just want to end their campaign as strongly as possible.
Wycombe Wanderers are currently 3rd in League One with 68 points from 36 games. The Chairboys are having an excellent campaign in League One and have defied all expectations, as they come into this one well in the automatic promotion hunt with ten games remaining.
However, they have seen their position gradually weaken in the last couple of months, with Wrexham having hunted them down and leapfrogged them into 2nd. Wycombe lost manager Mike Bloomfield to Championship strugglers Luton Town in January, and while they've still been good in the weeks since, they haven't quite managed to maintain their level.
Bloomfield's replacement, Mike Dodds, has been in charge for around seven weeks now, and the former Sunderland coach has guided the team to only two wins in seven league games. It's clearly not promotion form, and unless they can turn things around, they're unlikely going to be able to keep up with a Wrexham side that show no signs of slowing down.
They can at least take comfort in the knowledge that they have the league's top scorer in Richard Kone. Kone is a striker who's been very impressive this season and is highly-courted by many Championship clubs, and if Wycome are going to claim promotion this season, they'll need to rely on his goals.
After a disappointing result at the weekend, Wycombe desperately need to respond here and nothing less than three points will do.
