Walsall vs Chesterfield Prediction

Walsall holds an established position in this tie, and with the form seemingly picking up for the Saddlers at the right time, it should see them overcome a Chesterfield side, who have had an indifferent record away from home in the regular season.

Walsall had the fifth-best home record in the division, with 12 wins from 23 matches, accumulating 42 points from 69 points available. Walsall’s win against Crewe Alexandra seemed to have provided a boost of confidence for the Saddlers for the first leg victory against Chesterfield.

The visitors had the eighth-best record away from home. However, the Spireites lost more games than they won, with 11 losses to nine on their travels. Chesterfield also has an unwanted record against Walsall, with no wins in the last four meetings between the two sides.

Games involving Walsall have traditionally been low-scoring affairs, as fewer than 2.5 goals have been scored in five of the last six matches involving the hosts. Chesterfield have failed to keep a clean sheet in the last four meetings between the two sides. We can see Walsall progressing to Wembley with a 3-0 aggregate scoreline.

Walsall 1-0 Chesterfield - Walsall to progress 3-0 on aggregate.

Walsall vs Chesterfield Preview & Prediction

Walsall hold a comfortable lead against Chesterfield heading into the second, but will have to be wary in completing the task at hand and securing their place at Wembley.

Date: 16/05/2025
Location: Poundland Bescot Stadium, Walsall.
Kick-Off: 8 pm

Walsall secured an excellent 2-0 victory against Chesterfield in the first leg away from home, as the Saddlers produced a composed performance, despite previously being in woeful form heading into the playoffs. The home side for this game took the lead at Chesterfield in the 28th minute. Liam Gordon, a constant threat throughout the game, drew the late challenge from Liam Mandeville inside the penalty area, to which Taylor Allen duly dispatched the spot-kick. Walsall doubled their lead 11 minutes later, as Alfie Chang produced an excellent low-driven finish from just outside the area, to give the Saddlers a two-goal cushion and Chang’s first senior goal.

Walsall were in a comfortable position in the league standings during the regular season and looked destined to secure automatic promotion and potentially the league title. However, a run of no wins in 13 matches allowed Port Vale and, in particular, Bradford City to sneak ahead of the Saddlers on the final day to secure automatic promotion. Matt Saddler’s side finished in third place in League Two, having accumulated 77 points from 46 games - only a point behind Bradford City. Walsall scored 75 goals this season and conceded 54.

Nathan Lowe had been key for Walsall but was recalled by Stoke City before their EFL Trophy quarter-final against Peterborough United. Lowe had scored 15 league goals this season, and the mantle had been taken up by Jamille Matt (12) and, more notably, defender Taylor Allen (10).

Chesterfield secured their playoff place on the final day of the League Two season, with a 1-0 win against Accrington Stanley, thanks to a goal from Will Grigg. Paul Cook’s side accumulated 70 points from 46 games, scoring 73 and conceding 54. Will Grigg has been the standout player for Chesterfield this season, having scored 12 league goals this campaign.
