Arsenal welcome Coventry City to the Emirates Stadium on Friday for the first Premier League game of the season, as the 2026/27 campaign gets underway. This game pits last season's Premier League and Championship winners against each other to kickstart another dramatic league campaign across the league.
Arsenal finally reached the pinnacle of English football once again last season, after a 22-year drought for the Gunners. The capture of the league title showed the virtue of patience with Mikel Arteta's project, as they reached the summit at the top of the Premier League. The next task for the Gunners will be to retain the Premier League, which had become a difficult task for Liverpool to accomplish last time out, with only three teams in Premier League history managing to retain the crown (Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United).
The reigning champions have looked to reinforce their midfield this summer with the coveted signing of Newcastle United captain, Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian made his debut in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, along with Greek international Christos Tzolis who provided two assists in the Gunners' 3-0 win. Martin Ødegaard looks back to his best in the Arsenal midfield and expectations will be high following his excellent finish and Arsenal's third last Sunday.
The Gunners had the best home record in the division last season, only losing twice the entire campaign at the Emirates to Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth. Unsurprisingly, the foundation for Arsenal's league title was their defensive prowess, which led them to 19 clean sheets from 38 matches.
Coventry City's time away from the Premier League, finally came to an end last season as the Sky Blues claimed the Championship title under the stewardship of former Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard. The away side for this fixture, will no doubt be relishing their first game back in the Premier League for 25 years but they face a monumental task in facing the champions from the previous campaign.
The Sky Blues have been active in the transfer market, recruiting Carl Rushworth (who spent last season on loan at Coventry), Caleb Yirenkyi and have reportedly closed in on a deal to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi.
However, Arsenal should be expected to win here. One would suggest that Coventry City will be bouyant for this fixture, expect the champions to overcome any momentum the Sky Blues may have and record a win with a clean sheet.
Arsenal 2-0 Coventry
