On Sunday, 4th May, Brentford hosts Manchester United at the Gtech Community Stadium in what is a battle between 11th and 14th in the Premier League standings.
Date: 04/05/2025
Location: Gtech Community Stadium
Time: 2pm
When these two sides last met on 19th October, Erik ten Hag was still Manchester United manager and the Red Devils managed to earn a narrow 2-1 victory at Old Trafford as second half goals by Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund turned the game around after Ethan Pinnock had given the Bees the lead late on in first half stoppage time.
The last encounter between Brentford and United at the Gtech Community Stadium was a dramatic one, as Mason Mount gave the Old Trafford club a 96th-minute 1-0 lead which was swiftly cancelled out in the 99th-minute by Kristoffer Ajer.
Brentford are having a solid campaign under Thomas Frank, as they sit 11th in the table with 49 points from 34 games. This is an impressive feat for the Bees, as they have managed to sufficiently replace key players such as David Raya and Ivan Toney in recent transfer windows while progressing on the pitch, as they actually sit two points behind eighth-place Fulham who occupies a potential Europa Conference League qualifying position depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final.
Manchester United’s league campaign has been a write-off for a while, as they sit 21 points behind the likes of Nottingham Forest and Chelsea, who are fighting for fifth-place. It has been a turbulent season for the Red Devils, as they sacked Erik ten Hag following just three wins in their opening nine league matches at the start of the season, before replacing the Dutchman on a permanent basis with Ruben Amorim who has looked to implement a completely new system and style of play, one that has had a detrimental effect on United’s league form thus far but may reap rewards in the future.
There is still hope for United and Amorim this season, as the Red Devils have been firing on all cylinders in the UEFA Europa League, as they have one foot in the final of that competition, following their 3-0 win away at Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their semi-final tie. United are the only unbeaten team in European competitions this season (8 wins and 5 draws from 13 matches). Prior to the semi-final, the Red Devils had progressed past Lyon (7-6 on aggregate) and Real Sociedad (5-2 on aggregate) after finishing third in the Group Stage with 18 points from eight matches.
