Chelsea vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

Chelsea host Wolves in the Premier League looking for a victory to get back on track following a slump in form.

Date: 20/01/25

Kick-off time: 20:00

Venue: Stamford Bridge

After a very strong start to the season for Chelsea generated title discussions, their recent form has seen a significant decline. The Blues are winless in five games and are desperate for three points to maintain their position in the top five. More dropped points could risk them falling further, with Man City and Aston Villa sitting just two points behind.

Wolves are facing struggles at the other end of the table, falling into the relegation zone on goal difference. They are now winless in three after starting with two consecutive victories under new manager Vitor Pereira. Anything but a win would hurt their chances of survival further and present an even tougher uphill battle.

Both sides have vulnerable defences, though Chelsea should have the edge. The Blues are the third-highest scorers in the league facing the defence who have conceded the most. Cole Palmer continued his excellent season with another goal last time out, taking his tally to 14 for the campaign. Nicolas Jackson will be hoping to end his five-game goal drought and add to his nine goals. Wolves have conceded eight goals in their last three league games.

Defensively, however, Enzo Maresca’s men have had issues of late. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in seven of their last eight games, including conceding seven goals in the last four. The hosts have had trouble taking their chances and as a result allow their opponents back in the game, which Wolves could take advantage of. Matheus Cunha is the club’s leading scorer with 10, closely followed by Jorgen Strand Larsen’s seven.

These two teams have met 10 times in the Premier League since 2020, and it is Wolves who have the edge in this fixture. They have won four games to Chelsea’s three, including three victories in the last four meetings. Wolves won this corresponding fixture last season with a stunning 4-2 win at Stamford Bridge. Cunha scored a hat-trick. Goals were a feature in the reverse fixture earlier this campaign as Chelsea won 6-2 at Molineux, where Noni Madueke scored a hat-trick.

Team News

Chelsea

Chelsea recently recalled Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Crystal Palace, and he could be involved with injuries to Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana as well as uncertainty over the future of Axel Disasi. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is also linked with a move away, but is dealing with an injury.

Wolves

Boubacar Traore is nearing a return from a long-term injury, but this game appears to come a week too soon. Wolves, could, however, be boosted by the return of Toti Gomes, who has been absent with a hamstring strain.

Form Guide

Chelsea:

In their last five games, Chelsea have won one, drawn two and lost two. It has been a difficult stretch for the Blues as they have seen a sudden downturn in form. This continued in their most recent game at home to Bournemouth as they drew 2-2. Cole Palmer gave them the lead in the first half, but the visitors turned it around in the second. A stoppage time free-kick from Reece James salvaged a point.

This followed their only win of this stretch as they beat lower league Morecambe in the FA Cup third round. Tosin Adarabioyo (x2), Joao Felix (x2) and Christopher Nkunku were the goalscorers. A trip to Crystal Palace ended with more dropped points. They were held to a 1-1 draw after a late Jean-Phillipe Mateta goal cancelled out Palmer’s opener.

The draw stopped a run of two consecutive defeats. The latest was a 2-0 loss on the road at Ipswich, who won their first home game of the season. Liam Delap converted a controversial penalty, before former Blue Omari Hutchinson took advantage of a defensive error to double the score. The first loss was at home to Fulham on Boxing Day, who beat them 2-1. The hosts took the lead through Palmer, but the visitors turned it around late with goals from Harry Wilson and Rodrigo Muniz.

Wolves:

In their last five games, Wolves have won two, lost two and drawn one. It has been a solid stretch for Wolves under new management, and this run started with two consecutive wins. The first was a huge victory, as they were 2-0 winners at home to Manchester United. It was goalless at the break, before a Bruno Fernandes red card shifted the game in the hosts’ favour shortly after the restart. Goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan sealed the victory.

A trip to Tottenham ended with a positive result as they held Spurs to a 2-2 draw. Both sides squandered a lead, but Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late equaliser ensured the points were shared. They tasted defeat on home soil against Nottingham Forest, where they were convincingly beaten 3-0. Morgan Gibbs-White, Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi were the goalscorers.

Last weekend, they travelled to Bristol City in the third round of the FA Cup. They won 2-1 with goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rodrigo Gomes. Their most recent game was away at Newcastle where they lost 3-0. Alexander Isak (x2) and Anthony Gordon were the goalscorers.
