Top of the table Liverpool hosts bottom of the league Southampton at Anfield on Saturday in what is expected to be a Premier League mismatch.

The last league meeting between these two sides resulted in a much closer game than expected on paper, as Liverpool scraped a 3-2 win at St Mary’s back in late November, as goals from Adam Armstrong and Matheus Fernandes gave the Saints a shock 2-1 lead heading into the hour mark, before a Mohamed Salah brace saw Liverpool leave the south coast with all three points.
Liverpool have looked imperious under the management of Arne Slot, as they surge towards what looks like an inevitable 20th top-flight league title, as they are 13 points clear of second-place Arsenal with just ten matches to go having won 20, drawn seven and lost just once.
Mohamed Salah has been largely responsible for Liverpool’s dominance this season, as the Egyptian forward is having the season of his life, having scored 30 goals and created 22 assists in 40 matches across all competitions.
In terms of cup competitions, Liverpool have made it to the League Cup final where they’ll face Newcastle, having beaten the likes of West Ham (5-1), Brighton (3-2), Southampton (2-1) and Tottenham 4-1 on aggregate) along the way. However, in the FA Cup, they did suffer a shock 1-0 loss away at Plymouth Argyle.
The Reds look like one of the favourites to win the Champions League too, as they finished top of the group stage with seven wins from eight matches, before beating PSG 1-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.
Southampton look like a side that are merely just playing out fixtures until the end of the season, as they have won just two Premier League matches all season, with those victories coming at home against Everton and away at Ipswich Town. The Saints sit 13 points adrift of 17th-place Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Rumours are suggesting that Ivan Juric will depart Southampton at the end of the season. Since the Croatian joined the Saints, he has overseen two wins and ten losses, meaning that he has a 16% win percentage. To put it into perspective, the last Southampton manager to win two Premier League matches in charge is Ralph Hasenhuttl.
As previously mentioned, Southampton’s EFL Cup campaign ended at the hands of Liverpool (2-1) in the quarter-finals, while in the FA Cup, they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Championship outfit Burnley.
