On Sunday, 6th April, Manchester United hosts Manchester City in what is set to be a hotly contested Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
Date: 06/04/2025
Location: Old Trafford
Time: 4:30pm
This is the second time that these two sides have met this campaign, as Manchester City managed to beat Manchester United on penalties in the Community Shield after a 1-1 draw which saw Bernardo Silva score a 89th-minute equaliser after Alejandro Garnacho had given United the lead in the 82nd minute.
There was more late drama in the most recent league clash between the pair, as United emerged as 2-1 victors at the Etihad Stadium back on 15th December, as a Bruno Fernandes penalty in the 88th-minute and a stoppage time strike from Amad Diallo gave United all three points after Josko Gvardiol has headed in a deflected cross from Kevin De Bruyne late on in the first half.
Manchester United’s Premier League season is a good as irrelevant when it comes to achievements, as they sit 13th in the table with 37 points from 30 matches, 15 behind fourth-place Chelsea in the final Champions League qualification places, however, they still do have pride to play for here as they look to do the double over their city rivals for the first time since 2019/20.
Winning the UEFA Europa League will be United’s main focus and ambition this season, as that represents their only chance of qualifying for European football next season. Ruben Amorim’s side beat Real Sociedad 5-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16 to set up a quarter-final tie with Lyon.
Manchester City will be desperate to re-qualify for next season’s Champions League, as they are fifth in the Premier League with 51 points from 30 games, having won 15, drawn six and lost nine times. At present, there is very little room for error in the race for European football, as the likes of Fulham in 9th-place are just six points behind the Cityzens.
On top of their league ambition, City will be keen to win the FA Cup in order to avoid their first trophyless season since 2016/17. They will face Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals of that competition having progressed past AFC Bournemouth (2-1), Plymouth Argyle (3-1), Leyton Orient (2-1) and Salford City (8-0).
