Tottenham vs Leicester: Preview & Prediction

Tottenham Hotspur host Leicester City in the Premier League, with both teams looking for three points to end poor runs of form.

Date: 26/01/25

Kick-off time: 14:00

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Ange Postecoglou is under huge pressure as Tottenham manager with no wins in six league games, though he received some respite with victory in the Europa League in midweek. However, anything but three points this weekend will possibly heighten it to a point of no return. Spurs have endured a dreadful season, plagued with injuries and inconsistency. They are in the midst of a run which has seen them lose five of their last six league games, leaving them in 15th place. With just 24 points after 22 games, they sit eight points above Ipswich in 18th. They have already lost 12 games this season, only Leicester, Wolves and Southampton have lost more.

Their opponents Leicester are in a much more bleak position, sitting second from bottom. Although, the Foxes are just two points adrift from safety, and a victory could see them climb out of the relegation zone. This is much easier said than done, however, having lost seven in a row. After a winning start for Ruud van Nistelrooy in his first game in charge, they have only picked up one point since.

Goals are always a feature when Tottenham are involved, so the same should be expected here. The hosts’ 45 goals is the second-highest figure in the league, only behind leaders Liverpool. They should be very confident in adding to that tally against a third-worst Leicester defence. The visitors have kept just one clean sheet all season, that coming in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth in October.

Spurs will be without Dominic Solanke and Brennan Johnson, so will look to the likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Heung-min Son to provide goalscoring returns. The trio have combined for 20 league goals this season.

At the other end, Leicester have struggled to score goals. They have scored just two goals in the last seven games, Jordan Ayew and Stephy Mavididi with one apiece. However, both of these goals did come on the road. Jamie Vardy is the side’s top goalscorer with six, and will be the main threat up front.

These two sides have met eight times in the Premier League since 2020. It is a fixture that has been dominated by Tottenham in recent years, with five wins to Leicester’s two and one draw. However, they are winless in the last two meetings, the first coming in the 23-24 season. That game at the King Power ended in a 4-1 win to the Foxes, whilst the most recent game was another home game for Leicester on the opening weekend of the season, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. Vardy cancelled out an opening goal from Pedro Porro.

Team News

Tottenham

Tottenham are suffering from an injury crisis with several players out for multiple games. Dominic Solanke recently suffered a knee injury in training which will keep him out for around six weeks. Brennan Johnson is also out for a few weeks having picked up an injury against Arsenal. Timo Werner, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero remain out. However, Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma should be available.

Leicester

Mads Hermansen should be available to return this weekend. Ricardo Pereira remains out long-term, but Wilfred Ndidi is nearing a return with a possible comeback at the beginning of February.

Form Guide

Tottenham:

In their last five games, Tottenham have won three and lost two. It has been a poor stretch for Spurs, but it started with Carabao Cup action where they took a big step towards the final. They beat Liverpool 1-0 in the semi-final first leg at home as Lucas Bergvall netted the winner in the 86th minute.

Tamworth were their next opponents, this time in the FA Cup third round. They won 3-0, through goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson in addition to an own goal. However, this came in extra-time as the non-league side held Spurs to a goalless draw after 90 minutes. The North London derby saw another defeat in the league as Arsenal beat them 2-1. Heung-min Son gave Spurs the lead, but the Gunners turned it around before half-time.

Last weekend, they travelled to Goodison Park to take on Everton. They lost 3-2, conceding all three before half-time. They threatened a comeback with two late goals from Kulusevski and Richarlison, but were unable to find the equaliser. In their most recent game they faced Hoffenheim in the Europa League away from home. They picked up a 3-2 victory thanks to goals from James Maddison and Son (x2). The Germans threatened but never got back on level terms after falling behind three minutes in.

Leicester:

In their last five games, Leicester have lost four and won one. After a great start to life under Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Foxes have struggled to pick up points. This run started with a home game against champions Man City, where they lost 2-0 with goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland.

Another loss followed as they travelled to Aston Villa. They were beaten 2-1 with goals from Ross Barkley and Leon Bailey either side of a Stephy Mavididi equaliser. Next they played QPR in the third round of the FA Cup. They won 6-2 at home, with goals from James Justin (x2), Mavididi, Facundo Buonanotte, Jamie Vardy and Wout Faes.

Last week, they hosted Crystal Palace, but they were defeated once more. The final result was 2-0 with second half goals from Jean-Phillippe Mateta and Marc Guehi sealing their fate. Their most recent game was a second consecutive home game as they faced Fulham. Leicester lost 2-0 with second half goals from Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traore.
