Switzerland booked their place in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Algeria. So far, the Swiss have played Qatar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada and Algeria in their opening four fixtures, winning three times and drawing once. However, their game on Tuesday will see a step up in opposition as they face Colombia.
Apart from their opening game against Uzbekistan, Colombia have faced tricky tests in their other three World Cup games. Starting with a 1-0 win over a DR Congo side that gave England a run for their money in the last 32, followed by a goalless draw with Portugal, and then a 1-0 win over Ghana in their first knockout tie.
We're expecting a tight and tense 90 minutes on Tuesday night between two closely matched nations, but given the strength of their opponents at the World Cup so far, Colombia are our pick to win in this game.
We mentioned this game being close; well, each of Colombia's last three matches have produced under 1.5 total goals, with the South Americans keeping clean sheets in each of those matches. Switzerland have conceded at least one goal in three of their opening four matches, all against weaker opposition than Colombia.
Seven of Colombia's qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup featured under 1.5 goals, and we're expecting another low-scoring affair against Switzerland. When the Swiss have gone up against higher quality opposition this year, such as Norway and Germany, they haven't managed to win. Germany beat the Swiss 4-3 in March, and a few days later, the played a drew 0-0 with Norway.
Colombia avoided defeat in both of their qualifying matches against Argentina, winning 2-1 at home and drawing 1-1 away, so it is no surprise to see James Rodriguez and co performing so well at the World Cup.
Switzerland certainly won't be easy to beat. After going unbeaten in qualifying against Kosovo, Slovenia and Sweden, the Swiss have picked up three wins and a draw at the World Cup, but we can see their attack struggling against the robust and well-organised defence of Colombia that has shut out their opposition in each of their last three matches.
With all of the above in mind, we're backing a 1-0 win for Colombia in what should be a close and competitive 90 minutes plus in this last 16 tie in Vancouver.
Switzerland 0-1 Colombia
