England vs Spain Prediction

As most finals are, this game is likely to be a tight, cagey affair, with few goals separating the two sides. This England side are the epitome of resilience, having fought their way through adversity to reach the final. Some of England's most important players haven't hit their best level yet, with Lauren James failing to make her mark on either knockout game, while Alessia Russo has been unconvincing in front of goal. Defensively, England have looked weak at times, with Sarina Wiegman shuffling the pack on a couple of occasions throughout the tournament.

Spain, by contrast, have looked very convincing. La Roja have won every single game of the tournament so far, and have both scored the most goals and conceded the fewest. Spain are ranked 2nd in the world art present, but many regard them as the best side on the planet, with a squad that boasts a number of Ballon d'Or contending talents.

Spain have also edged the recent head-to-head meetings between the two sides, winning two of the last three meetings, including the World Cup final in 2023. The Lionesses have shown throughout this tournament that they'll fight until the death, but this game might be one step too far for the reigning champions.

England vs Spain Preview & Prediction

England and Spain will face off this weekend in the 2025 Women's European Championship final, a rematch of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in which Spain prevailed. The game pits two of the pre-tournament favourites against one another, with England defending their 2022 European title and Spain aiming for their first continental crown after becoming world champions two years ago.

  • Date: 27/07/2025
  • Kick-off time: 20:00
  • Location: St. Jakob-Park, Basel

The Lionesses' road to the final has been rocky, with Sarina Wiegman's side staring down the barrel of the elimination gun in both the quarterfinal and the semi-final, only to be rescued in dramatic fashion on both occasions. After a narrow opening defeat to France (2-1), the Lionesses responded with a convincing 4-0 win over the Netherlands and a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Wales in the group stage. Their knockout rounds saw a dramatic penalty shootout win over Sweden, following a 2-2 draw, and an extra-time 2-1 victory against Italy. England have been below par in the knockout stages, particularly defensively, where they've given away a number of cheap goals. Super sub Michelle Agyemang has been the shining light of the knockout stages, but if England want to retain their Euros crown this weekend, there is a feeling that Wiegman is going to need a lot more from the majority of her squad against the Spanish.

Spain, led by coach Montse Tome, have been impressive in every facet en route to the final. They topped Group B with wins against Portugal (5-0), Belgium (6-2), and Italy (3-1), then defeated Switzerland 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Their semi-final against Germany was tightly contested, requiring extra time before Aitana Bonmati scored the decisive goal in the 113th minute to send Spain through. The squad, including the likes of Alexia Putellas and Bonmati, contains a frightening amount of game-breaking talent, which makes them exceptionally hard to beat. Notably, Spain head into this final undefeated in the tournament so far.

These two teams are well acquainted with one another; two years earlier, Spain triumphed in the World Cup final over England, which England knocked Spain out of the 2022 Euros in the quarterfinals. England will be eager for redemption from the 2023 World Cup final, while Spain seeks to affirm their rising status in women’s football through a third major title, having also won the 2024 Nations League.

Team News

England Team News:

The Lionesses come into this game with a fully fit squad an no suspensions. Leah Williamson will likely start again despite not being at full fitness, while Sarina Wiegman has a big decision to make regarding Michelle Agyemang.

Agyemang has rescued England twice in the last two games off the bench, and the 19-year-old will feel as though she's deserving of a start. Ultimately, Wiegman might feel as though she's most impactful coming off the bench, and that looks set to be the role she'll continue to play.

Predicted lineup: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Morgan, Greenwood; Toone, Walsh, Stanway; James, Russo, Mead.

Spain Team News:

Spain, like England, have a fully available squad with no injury concerns or suspensions. La Roja havea very settled starting lineup, and that's unlikely to be tinkered with here.

Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmati and Esther Gonzalez are the main attacking threats for Spain, and all three will lineup from the start here.

Predicted lineup: Coll; Batlle; Paredes, Mendez, Carmona; Bonmati, Guijarro, Putellas; Caldenty, Gonzalez, Pina.

England come into the final in good form on the whole. Their most recent match saw them emerge 2-1 winners after extra time against Italy in the semi-finals. Italy took a first-half lead, but Michelle Agyemang’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser forced extra time, where Chloe Kelly sealed the victory in the 119th minute. In the quarter-finals, England drew 2-2 with Sweden before advancing on penalties in a dramatic contest.

Their group stage campaign finished with an emphatic 6-1 win over Wales, following a convincing 4-0 victory against the Netherlands. Their only defeat in this run was the opening group game, a narrow 2-1 loss to France. Across these five matches, England have scored 16 goals and conceded seven.

Spain enter the final riding a wave of confidence after five consecutive victories. In the semi-finals, Aitana Bonmatí struck in extra time to earn a 1-0 win over Germany and a maiden European final appearance for La Roja. Prior to that, Spain dispatched Switzerland 2-0 in the quarter-final - another display marked by dominant possession and defensive control.
