The Netherlands enter the tournament as ranked outsiders at 16/1. The pre-tournament odds place Ronald Koeman’s side as nothing more than potential quarterfinalists, however as proved in the World Cup, the Netherlands can certainly compete against the better teams on their day.

The Netherlands boast some of the world’s best with the likes of Frenkie De Jong, Virgil Van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt expected to contribute to any success that the Oranje may have in this tournament.

Netherlands are in a group with Poland, Austria and former World Champions France and they will be hoping to better their performance from Euro 2020 – they were eliminated in the round of 16 by the Czech Republic. The Netherlands had an impressive record in qualifying, having won six and lost two of their eight qualifying games.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is in his second season on Merseyside and the 25-year-old has enjoyed a rather productive campaign in which he has won the Carabao Cup for his club.

Gakpo has 21 goal contributions for his club this season, including four goals in eight appearances in the UEFA Europa League. Predominantly used across the front three, Gakpo will be a tremendous asset for Ronald Koeman in a 4-3-3 because of his versatility.

For his national side, Gakpo had a fine tournament for the Netherlands in their previous World Cup campaign. Gakpo finished the tournament with three goals in five appearances as the Netherlands reached the quarter finals, before they were eliminated by Argentina.

Can Gakpo repeat his previous tournament performance and guide Netherlands to their second European Championship?

Memphis Depay has not been in particularly great form for Atletico Madrid this season, having only scored nine goals in 28 appearances, providing only two assists.

The former Manchester United player will provide versatility similarly to his international compatriot Cody Gakpo, as Ronald Koeman will look to experiment with his forward line. Primarily used as a centre forward for his club side, Koeman will have the option of deploying him on the left-side should he choose rotate Depay and Gakpo.

For his national side, Depay has a brilliant scoring rate since his debut in 2013. Depay has scored 44 goals in 90 appearances for the Netherlands. In the European qualifiers for this tournament, he only scored once in two matches, although his previous campaign was far more prolific.

For the tournament in 2020, Depay scored six and contributed seven assists aiding the Netherlands to qualify for their tenth tournament.

Can Depay rediscover his previous form to win the Golden Boot?

Donyell Malen presents another forward option for Ronald Koeman and just like his compatriots Gakpo and Depay, Malen is comfortable playing across that forward three if needs be.

The Borussia Dortmund forward has enjoyed a fine campaign on a club level and individual level. Malen has 13 goal contributions in 25 Bundesliga appearances as Borussia Dortmund have qualified for the UEFA Champions League for another consecutive season.

Speaking of the Champions League, Malen has featured in seven of the games along Borussia Dortmund’s unlikely road to the final. Malen has only scored the once in that run, however, should Dortmund overcome Real Madrid, Malen will join the likes of Virgin Van Dijk in lifting club football’s biggest prize.

In his last tournament for the Netherlands, Malen provided two assists in four games in Euro 2020. Malen has ten goal contributions in 30 appearances since his arrival to the national side in 2019.

An outside chance for the Golden Boot this summer is Ajax striker Brian Brobbey. Brian Brobbey was linked last summer with a shock move to Manchester United and has been arguably the only positive from Ajax’s disappointing campaign.

Brian Brobbey predominantly plays as a typical centre forward and has been amongst the league leaders in the goal scoring charts this season. Brobbey has scored 18 goals and provided nine assists in the Eredivisie this season. The 22-year-old has 33 goal contributions in 41 appearances this season across all competitions.

The Ajax forward remains an outside chance to make the squad in truth, having only recently made his international debut back in October of last year.

Brian Brobbey’s club teammate Steven Bergwijn is the last name on our list for potential Golden Boot winners for the Netherlands this summer. Bergwijn if you remember, was once on the books at Tottenham Hotspur and scored on his debut against Manchester City.

Now currently plying his trade at Ajax, Bergwijn has been in fine form for the club this season. The left sided forward, has 15 goal contributions in 29 appearances across all competitions this season for his club this season.

Bergwijn made his international debut in 2018 under Ronald Koeman and has gone on to score eight goals in 32 appearances for the national side. Bergwijn didn’t make the last Euros squad, although two years later he made his international tournament debut in Qatar.
