Slovakia vs Ukraine: Footy Accumulators Prediction

Ukraine faces a crucial match against Slovakia, where a win is crucial to re-establish their campaign after their opening game defeat against Romania. Despite the setback, Ukraine possesses significant quality within their squad and is poised for a strong comeback. Dovbyk, a prolific striker with 24 league goals for Girona this season, will be a key figurehead in their attack. Additionally, Sudakov, who showcased his attacking prowess with four shots in the previous match, will be instrumental in creating scoring opportunities.

Slovakia, despite their unexpected victory against Belgium, enters this game as underdogs. While their win has instilled confidence, it is unlikely to overshadow Ukraine's overall quality. Furthermore, Slovakia's Duda, known for his disciplinary issues, could be a liability. With a tendency for cards, he might face a booking in this match, potentially disrupting Slovakia's defensive structure. We predict a 2-0 victory for Ukraine, reflecting their determination to bounce back and secure crucial points in the tournament.

Slovakia vs Ukraine: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Ukraine take on Slovakia in the second game of Group E, with both sides experiencing contrasting fortunes in their tournament openers.

            • Date: 21/06/24
            • Kick-off time: 14:00
            • Venue: Merkur Spiel Arena

Three points are almost a must for Ukraine in this game if they want to keep their chances of a top two finish in the group alive. They were shocked in their group opener against Romania, as they lost 3-0, with Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin struggling. It was his misplaced pass which led to the opening goal, as the ball eventually fell to Nicolae Stanciu, who found the top left corner with a fabulous long range strike. Lunin will have been disappointed with the second strike too, as he was beaten by another shot from outside the box, this time Razvan Marin on the scoresheet. This means that a second consecutive loss would leave them in a precarious position in the group, with their slim hopes resting on being one of the best third place teams with a win in their final game.

They will have a tough task against Slovakia, who picked up a stunning 1-0 win against group favourites Belgium. Any result here will put Slovakia in a very strong position to advance to the next round. Their victory was statistically the biggest upset in competition history according to the FIFA World Rankings, with Slovakia ranked 48th compared to Belgium in third.

Heading into the Euros, Ukraine had scored nine goals in their last five games, but their offensive struggles against Romania could be a cause for concern. Striker Artem Dovbyk scored 24 goals in 36 games for Girona, but failed to make an impact in the opener. Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk was also nullified, and the pair may have a difficult time once more against a defence who have now kept three clean sheets in a row. Slovakia have also been strong in front of goal, scoring nine in the same period.

These two teams have met just eight times before, and there has been very little to split the pair, with Ukraine winning three to Slovakia’s two. They have not played each other in the European Championships, though faced off in qualifying for the 2016 tournament. The last meeting came in 2018 as they played in the Nations League. This was one of Slovakia’s two wins, in which they were victorious 4-1. They went 2-0 up with goals from Albert Rusnak and Juraj Kucka before half-time, though this lead was cut in half immediately after the restart by Yevhen Konoplyanka. Adam Zrelak and Robert Mak added two more for the hosts to put the game to bed.

            Team News

            Slovakia

Slovakia have no new injury concerns following their opening game against Belgium.

            Ukraine

Vitalii Mykolenko missed the first game after picking up an injury in the final friendly prior to the tournament, so his availability against Slovakia is in question. Mykhailo Mudryk and Oleksandr Zinchenko will once again play a big part.

            Slovakia

In their last five games, Slovakia have won three, drawn one and lost one. It was a good stretch for Slovakia heading into the tournament, but they made the dream start in their opening game against Belgium as they won 1-0. The only goal of the game came early on, as Ivan Schranz and his side capitalised on an error by Jeremy Doku to go ahead. Belgium had two goals disallowed for offside and a handball as the Slovakians managed to hold on for a historic victory.

This followed two consecutive 4-0 wins against Wales and minnows San Marino. The latest of which was a victory against Wales, with the first goal scored on the stroke of half-time by Juraj Kucka. The lead was doubled by Robert Bozenik, before Ethan Ampadu converted into his own net to make it three. Laszlo Benes completed the scoring in the 90th minute. San Marino were on the end of the same scoreline, though they took a more convincing 3-0 lead into the break. Tomas Rigo broke the deadlock eight minutes in, and Tomas Suslov added a second immediately after. Lukas Haraslin made it three before half-time, with the fourth coming from David Strelec.

A friendly against Norway closed the March international break, and this ended in a 1-1 draw. Alexander Sorloth scored the opener 18 minutes in. Slovakia managed just two shots on target, but took advantage of one of their opportunities late on to salvage a draw thanks to Ondrej Duda. The first game of this run was a 2-0 defeat against Austria. They conceded in the first minute to Christoph Baumgartner, before Andreas Weimann put the game to bed late on.

            Ukraine

In their last five games, Ukraine have won two, lost two and drawn one. It was a decent stretch for Ukraine heading into the tournament, but they opened up the Euros in disastrous fashion with a 3-0 loss against Romania. Nicolae Stanciu opened the scoring on half an hour with a stunning finish into the top left hand corner from long range. Razvan Marin doubled the lead with another strike from outside the box, with the ball eluding goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. Denis Dragus scored a third moments later to put the game to bed.

Their preparations for the competition ended with a dominant 4-0 win away from home at Moldova. Roman Yaremchuk gave them a second minute lead before Viktor Tsygankov doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time. Artem Dovbyk made it three shortly after the restart, and Georgiy Sudakov completed the scoring. It was a good response to a 3-1 defeat to Poland in the game prior. Poland raced into a three-goal lead before half an hour, with strikes from Sebastian Walukiewicz, Piotr Zielinski and Taras Romanczuk putting them ahead. Dovbyk pulled one back before half-time, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

This followed a goalless draw at Germany, in which the hosts dominated with 27 attempts, but the Ukraine defence held firm. They only managed three shots on target themselves, with neither side able to find a breakthrough. The first game of this run was a 2-1 at home to Iceland in the final playoff game which secured their place in the Euros. They went behind to an Albert Gudmundsson strike on 30 minutes, but turned it around in the second half with goals from Tsygankov and then Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk, who netted late on.
