5 Tips for Thursday’s International Action - 11/11/21

Republic of Ireland vs Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo to Score First - 9/5

On Thursday night, the Republic of Ireland host Portugal in what is a dead rubber match for Stephen Kenny’s side who have almost no chance of qualifying for Qatar 2022.

In the last meeting between these two sides in September, Portugal emerged as 2-1 winners thanks to two late goals by Cristiano Ronaldo having initially fallen behind to John Egan’s 45th-minute opener.

Since that victory over Ireland In Group A, which leaves Fernando Santos’ side 11 points clear of the Boys in Green in second place, Portugal have won all of their other matches against Qatar 3-1, before defeating Azerbaijan and Qatar again 3-0 and thumped Luxembourg last time out where Ronaldo bagged a hattrick.

Ronaldo’s hattrick for Portugal in his last match took his international goal tally up to 115 in 182 caps, seeing the 36-year-old priced at 9/5 to score first at the Aviva Stadium.

Greece vs Spain: Spain to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 - 5/4

Greece and Spain go head to head with one another on Thursday night in Group B in what is a battle of second versus third in the standings, with the visitors leading the way by four points after six matches.

The Greeks have shown their capabilities in recent qualifiers, as they drew 1-1 with Kosovo in September, before defeating Sweden 2-1 and Georgia 2-0, before being beaten by the Swedes away from home in the return match, whilst things haven’t been all plain and sailing for Luis Enrique’s men, as they were also beaten 2-1 by Sweden but, they did hammer Georgia 4-0, before beating both Kosovo and Italy in the qualifiers and Nations League, before losing the final of the latter tournament 2-1 to France.

When these two sides met in March prior to Euro 2020, the match finished 1-1 as Alvaro Morata’s 33rd-minute opener was cancelled out by an Anastasios Bakasetas penalty in the 56th minute, with the latter’s goal ending up being Greece’s only shot of the match with 20% possession to their name.

The next tip also comes from Group B where top of the group Sweden travel to fourth-place Georgia in a bid to try and consolidate top spot for Qatar 2022.

Germany vs Liechtenstein: Germany -5 Goals Handicap - 5/6

Hansi Flick’s Germany side come into matchday nine of Group J having already won the group, facing a Liechtenstein side that have managed just one point and conceded 23 goals in eight matches.

The last time these two sides played, Germany won the match 2-0 in Liechtenstein thanks to goals by Timo Werner and Leroy Sane, but, Die Mannschaft did register 30 shots with 86% possession.

In three of Germany’s last four matches, Flick’s men have hammered Armenia 6-0, as well as both Iceland and North Macedonia 4-0, where Jamal Musiala and Chelsea duo Werner (2) and Kai Havertz both got on the scoresheet. Having managed high tallies against sides that are arguably better than Liechtenstein, there is a good chance that Germany will score a lot of goals in their upcoming qualifying match for Qatar 2022.

Azerbaijan vs Luxembourg: Luxembourg to win & BTTS - 6/1

Azerbaijan face a tricky test home test versus Luxembourg in Baku in Group A.

Luxembourg are currently third in the standings following a shock 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium, before defeating Azerbaijan 2-1 via goals from Mica Pinto and Gerson Rodrigues, with Emin Mahmudov’s 67th-minute goal turning out to be a mere consolation.

Azerbaijan are bottom with just one point from seven matches and even lost to Thursday’s opponents by a 2-1 scoreline at home in the UEFA Nations League in September last year, as Rodrigues proved to be the thorn in their side once again, as the ESTAC Troyes loanee scored the winner against them for the second time in three matches.
